The Cardinals defense held the t-eopards for three plays, forcing them to punt on the fourth down On tone's third play of the - gwme, Gregg Rietmann brokP loose for a rB yard touchdown run Shawn LaKue ran in for the extra points The Cardinal defense again held the leopards who were forced to punt. The Cards moved the hall down to the 38 yard line Quarterback Jeff CHams handed the hall to Yetmann who scampered into the end zone for six more joints. The extra points were no good The score at the end of the first quarter was 14-0 with the Cards out in the lead lone was the first to score in the second quarter with Riet mann pushing in from the one-yard line. The extra points again failed. On Cove's next set of plays, the ball was fumbled and Rietmann came up with the ball for the Cardinals. The Cards capitalized on this as Denny Starr threw a 13-yard pass to Treve Peterson for a touchdown. The pass for the extra points failed Heppner tv Andv (,011111111 Saturday afternoon, the Heppner Mustangs took on the Klgm Huskies, at Elgin and suffered a heart breaking defeat at the hands of Klgin, 3r-7. The Mustangs were forced to make the opening kick off. Doug Holland hooted the ball 51 yards. Klgin didn't gain enough yardage for a first on their first three downs, so were lined up to punt when a flag was dropped. Carl Ham mond was offsides. That cost Heppner five yards and gave the Huskies a first down. Heppner tightened up after the peiiiilty and didn't let anything get by them. Klgin was finally forced to punt. Heppner was then in control of the ball but was unable to move it. Holland was forced to Barratt Coach Mevers sent his second string offense and defense into the game for most of the third and fourth quarters The score at the end of the third quarter was 42-0. Cove's first touchdown of the game came on a one yard run by Danny Frank. The extra points were good on a pass from Kenny Wells to Doug Grosse. The leopards forced the Cards to punt on the next series On the (jeopards first play from scrimmage. Wells suffers heartbreak punt, and the punt was good for 39 yards. Klgin's no. 34. Clay Wil helm, scored a touchdown and made the extra point kick, which made the score Elgin. 7. Heppner, 0 As they made the kick off. Brian Thompson returned for a few yards. Quarterback John Bier made a handoff to John Murray, giving Heppner a first down. Bier made another hand off, this time to Karl Hammond, who gave Heppner another first down and ended the first quarter. Second quarter action just got underway when the refer ees moved the ball and the game started over again. The Mustangs were unable to make another first, so they were forced to punt. Patti would like to attend Oregon College of Education and major in secondary education and Language Arts. Patti is the youngest daughter of Jim and Barbara Bloodsworth. She is a caring individual and radiates cheerfulness. This concern for others and positive outlook help to make her an outstanding addition to the Heppner High School Student Itodv. The last touchdown of the game came on a 44-yard pass from Mark Mullins to Frank. The extra points were good on a pass from Mullins to Mike I.uta. making the final score 42-24 The Cardinals rushed for 322 yards wilh Rietmann leading the way with 220 yards. LaRue followed with 74 yards. The (jeopards rushed for yards. Their leading rusher was the ball and had to give it to Elgin They scored another touchdown, but missed the extra point At this point the score was 13-zip As they kicked off. Brett Sherer received and returned 31 yards The Mustangs decid ed to make a few pass plays, but Bier couldn't get rid of the ball and was sacked twice in a row. Bier was already shaken up from his last week's in jury. In the second half head coach John Sporseen put in Doug Holland in place of Bier for quarterback. His first pass was completed to Tony Cur rin. giving Heppner a first down Holland threw a 44-yard pass to Hick Cole to make the first and only touchdown for the Mustangs, and Mollahan made the extra point. Murray booted the ball 29 yards and. believe it or not. The Hornets beat Detroit. 38-6. in their quarter final match. This week's game will be held Saturday. Nov. 22. at 1 pm. on the Cardinal gridiron. The Hornets are guided by first -year coach Bob Phelps. Phelps has led the Hornets to a perfect 6-0 league record and 9-0 season record. The Hornets are led by six seniors who have all been starters both offensively and defensively since their soph omore year. Offensively the Hornets are led by quarterback, Dennis Wilson. Wilson has a 60 percent completion average for the season. He is helped Harlem Clowns 'dunk' in Heppner High Dec. 2 "Super athletes who play for laughs" is one way to describe the Harlem Clowns, the world famous exhibition basketball team, which comes to the Heppner High School gym nasium for a night of fun and frolic on Tuesday. Dec. 2. at 7:30 p.m. Members of the Harlem organization are picked for showmanship as well as basketball ability. Every year, two weeks before the season begins, owner Al . Pullins holds training camp in hands of Elgin , v J Can Eat 12 Years & Older Under 12 Years J B Sat., Nov, out by running back. Corey Wafer, who is the quickest person on the team, and all-league last year as a safety. Defensively the Hornets are led by hose guard, David Kirkendall. He is 5' 11" and weighs 210 pounds and is a good pass rusher. The Hornets play a 3-4 defense with three of their four line backers making honorable mention on the all league team last year. The first unit defense has given up only three touchdowns this year, and only one of them in the first half. The Hornets like to run a balanced attack with the run and the pass. They have a tendency to stay with what is going good for them. The team's strength seems to be its defense, with unity and pressure on the quarter back. Experience also is a plus for the Hornets. Usually he is a college man. having been a star performer first in high school. 2. He must have good character and the ability to get along with others. This is most necessary for men who travel daily and live together at nights in motels five months a year. !-. ..." Farmers Home Administration closed 17-21 The Farmers Home Admin istration office at 1229 S.E. 3rd St., Pendleton, will be closed 22 weakness may be a lack of depth, as seven players play both ways. Coach Phelps has no predic tion for the game, but says it is harder to play away from home. He does feel, however, that his team has lots of momentum going, and that it should be a good ball game. ' The Cardinals also have momentum going for them, coming off what was probably their best defensive game of the season last week at Cove. The Cardinals expect the Hornets to throw the ball more than they run as it seems to be their offensive strength. According to assistant coach Del LaRue, "We must maintain the high intensity and emotion that we played with last week at Cove." The Cards will work hard on pass defense this week and also on blocking the 3-4 defense. at 3. He must have basketball ability, the potential to be a showman and a flair for the comic caper. At first a new player is often shy and sometimes reluctant to enter into the comedy routines-but he catches on quick. Through the years, the team changes - players leave, retire, find year-around em ployment in other fields - so new men must be discovered and new "showmen" developed.
