SIX-The Heppner GaieUe-Timts, Heppner, Oregon, Thursday, October 30, 1980 Long-time county resident Carrie Becket to be feted on 96th birthday BY Justin Weatherford , ' Sunday afternoon, Nov. 2, her family, long-time friends and a few former pupils will honor 96-year-old Carrie Becket at a birthday party at the Pioneer Memorial Hospital solarium. Carrie has lived in Morrow County since Dec. 31, 1907, when she came from Portland by train to take a teaching job. She says she was a homesick girl when she had to change cars at Arlington and stepped out in a big wind and sand storm. At Morgan the train had to be stopped while the sand was cleaned off. Geh certification and a letter she carried from the Portland superintendent. The next day Mr. Robinson, chairman of the Liberty , District School Board and the postmaster at Liberty, came to take her out to his home where she lived during the time she taught at Liberty School. She had about 20 pupils there. Mabel French, Heppner, is her only surviving Liberty pupil. " On June 3, 1908, in Portland, Carrie married wheat rancher, Walter Becket. When they came back to the county by train, his team and wagon were waiting at the livery stable in lone to take them out to the Becket Ranch. Through the years on the ranch they traded in Heppner. Carrie sold their surplus eggs here for eight cents a dozen. They had two children, Laurence and Margaret (Mrs. Claude Buschke). Carrie's husband and their daughter died within the same year, 1967. Carrie recalls that Walter bought their first automobile in 1914 "a Ford which cost $550." During World War I, Carrie was asked to go back to teaching at the Eight Mile School. Wedding Announcement Matteson Schoonover She had about 25 pupils there during 1919 and 1920, including Kenneth Batty, Florence and Esther Bergstrom and her nephew Harold, and son, Laurence. . Carrie and Walter stayed on the old Becket Ranch Bald Carrie, "until his brother Charley and Gladys Van Horn married. Then we bought our own place where we stayed until our son, Laurence, married Florence Bergstrom. We moved into Heppner in 1954. Now that Laurence is retired, his son, Ron, operates both Becket Ranches." In 1954 in Heppner Carrie began playing pinochle with good friends. Their pinochle club was disbanded after 24 happy years together. Mary Harris, Hazel Hamlin, Pearl Wright and Carrie were original members of the club. ' Carrie is very proud of her four grandchildren, three boys and one girl, and of her four great-grandchildren, also three boys and one girl. Carrie Becket has now been a resident of the Pioneer Memorial Hospital Nursing Home for about one year, where she shares Room 215 with Esther (Mrs. Oscar) Peterson. Tami is the daughter of Laurence and Sharon Schoonover, Lexington. Ralph is the son of Vern Matteson, Dexter, Ore., and Grace Matteson, Blachly, Ore. Christian Women's Club (CWC) has a new meeting place at the Degree of Honor Hall next to the First National Bank on Main Street in Heppner. The club will meet Tuesday. Nov. 4 at 6:45 for a dessert of pie, coffee and hot apple cider for $1.75. The theme is "America, the Beautiful." X singing group from the junior high under Miss Coon will sing our theme song, "God Bless America." a special feature is "Beauty in Glass" with Liz Curtis. Ev- Births Julie Ann Larson A daughter, Julie Ann, was born to Roxie Ann and Richard Lee Larson, spray, on Oct. 27, 1980 at Pioneer Memorial Hospital in Heppner. Julie Ann weighed 8 lbs., 6V4 oz. Grandparents are Naomi and Luther Adams, White Salmon, Wash., and Lila and Robert Larson, Spray. Jerls Michael Stephens A son, Jeris Michael, was born Sept. 30 to Allen and Linda Stephens, former Umatilla residents, now living in Mon tana. III it a time when Americans can no longer depend on foreign oil, Oregon is fortunate to have nuclear power as a major source of electricity. Nuclear power, right now, pro vides over 20 of Oregon's electricity. For four years, the Trojan plant has supplied safe energy needed to main tain Oregon's economy. But Ballot Measure 7 would ban Oregon's option to use more nuclear power no matter how great our need for it until at least the 21st century. Even though its misleading language does not mention banning nuclear power, Measure 7 effectively will cut off Oregon's ability to even plan for more nuclear power. It will take the federal government at least until the 1990s to meet 7's tricky requirements ones that will do nothing to make nuclear power any safer than it is right now. It make no sense to ban any energy option at a time when energy shortages threaten to occur in the years ahead. As the National Academy of Sciences recently concluded: There is no way for America to meet its energy requirements in the next twenty years without coal and nuclear power. And the vast majority of Ore gon's scientists agree: this is no time to ban the option for additional nuclear power particularly when we already depend upon it for much of our state's electricity. Vote to keep the nuclear option.
