The Heppner team connists of 13 seniors. 11 juniors, and 7 sophomores, 16 of which have played varsity at least one year. This year's first game Is at Stanfield on Friday, Sept. 12. With six of the eight starters back from last year's state championship team, coach Gordon Meyers says there's no doubt that's where the team's strength lies. Actually the Cardinals shouldn't be hurting too much on offense either this year, with returning running backs, and all but three linemen back from last year. "Right now we have two boys vying for the quarterback spot," says Meyers. He wasn't prepared to say who would end up with the starting Job, however. "We'll probably be running the ball a lot," he says, "but that doesn't mean we can't throw it." Meyers says probably the toughest opponent his team will face in league play will be Arlington. "They have their whole backfield back from last year." he points out. He then lists Condon and Dufur as the next toughest teams.' the Cardinals will face. "Condon will come up with something" he says. "They always do." However, perhaps the stiff est competition the team will face will be in its first encounter, a non-league game against Touchet.Wash. They were Wa shington State champions last year, and Meyers says it could be the toughest team he has ever faced. "We'll be challenged right off." The Cardinals have a big reserve of players to draw on thisyear. With 28 boys out for the team . Meyers says it's the biggest turnout lone has ever had. The team is shy on juniors, however, with only oneout for the squad. The rest are five sophomores, eight freshmen and the remainder seniors. Only one starter is back from last year, although there are several with some varsity experience. "The girls have been work ing very hard in practice and are actually looking pretty good." says Stefani. "But it's hard to say how we'll do this year." The team is a little short on players, the coach says, with only a total of 12 girls out for volleyball. "I don 't k now if we will even have a JV team this year." says Stefani. Normally a varsity and JV team wil , carry 10 per team. The strengths of the varsity team this year will have to be serving and defensive play, says the coach, "because it certainly isn't in our height." She says the taQest girl is only five feet, eight inches. The schedule looks pretty tough for the team this year, says Stefani. They open against Riverside High here Sept. 18, and play in a tournament at Blue Mountain Sept. 13. lone Cardinal club meeting Sept. 16 The lone Cardinal Club will hold it's first meeting of the year on Tuesday, Sept. 16 at 8 p.m. in the school cafeteria. This first meeting will be the annual reception in honor of the teachers of both lone Grade and High School's. The Cardinal Club is tone's parent and teacher organizat ion. Anyone interested in the school, and especially all parents of school children are invited to join this organizat ion. The Club meets only four times a year and sponsors a dinner in the Fall as their money-raising project All money raised by the Cardinal Club is used locally for the lone schools and school relat ed activities. Some projects of the Cardinal Club are: a $200 scholarship awarded a senior at graduation; the Christmas candy that is distributed to all who attend the school Christ mas program ; the teacher's reception; graduation recep tion; the movie shown the students the last day of school, and various special projects. Officers for the Cardinal Club for 1980-81 are Maryan McElligott, President ; Eunice McElligott, Vice-president; and Joan Doherty, Secretary Treasurer. the a genda for the evening will be a short business meeting followed by entertainment provided by the lone music department. Refreshments will be served and all are urged to come and meet and visit with the lone teachers. "All our games are hard this year," she says. "We play Heppner, Wahtonka and Sher man County." She says the only teams they play from their size school are Cascade Locks and Wheeler County, both non-league. - Lions sponsor golf benefit An 18-hole golf tournament, sponsored by the Heppner Lions Club and benefitting the Oregon Sight Foundation, wfll be held at the Willow Creek Country Club on Sunday, Sept. 21. A $10 entry fee will cover a 9-hole qualifying round, 18 holes of play, lunch, and trophies for the winners. The Oregon Sight Foundat ion provides assistance for those in need of sight and hearing benefits. It operates an eye clinic in Portland and coordinates donors, transpor tation, and recipients of eye transplants. It also provides examinations for those who cannot afford them.
