T J f -r -:- - i 1 ; - ....n 1 - ' Pennv Connor concentrates on the high jump bar Pettyjohn, LaRue, Kim Pettyjohn was named senior girl athlete of the year and Dennis Stefani and Robin LaRue tied for the same award for the boys at lone High School at a sports banquet last week. Stefani was a standout for the lone football and basket ball teams and LaRue was also a leader on the basketball team and track team. Petty john was a school record-breaker on the girls track team. Five letters in tennis were handed out by Coach Duane Payne. Kate Gutierrez was the only female award winner while Donnie Taylor. Chris Rietmann. Roger Childers and Horse contest soon Morrow County will have a horse judging contest at 9:15 a.m. Saturday. May 31. at the Morrow County Fair Grounds in Heppner. All interested persons. 4-H members, ect.. are invited to attend. Classes will be: halter, Western and English equita tion, and identification of horse equipment parts, and--or feeds. Participants should take their own pencils, to try to place classes as the judge does. Tack and Apparel Swap People who wish to trade, sell or buy riding apparel, and-or horse tack should plan on taking their trading stock to the Morrow County Fair grounds There will be a table for articles to be displayed: articles should be marked with one's name, address, suggested price, and mater ials for which they are to be traded. Certificate winners were Lisa Meyers, Patti Taylor and Craig Guiterrez. Lindstrom was awarded as the most improved player on the tennis team and Kate Gutierez was the most in spirational. Eight letters were awarded to members of the lone girls 7th grade Heppner's seventh grade girls excelled at the District Track Meet at the junior high level May 15 in Umatilla. The girls came in first place with 80 team points with Athena Weston second with 57. Heppner's seventh grade boys finished sixth, the eighth grade boys were also sixth and the eighth grade girls finished fifth out of the 13 schools at the meet Stephi Payne led the se venth grade girls to their win as she came in first place in both the 100 meters and 200 meters. Pam Orr was first in the 300 meter hurdles and second in the softball throw. Kelli Bergstrom was second in the 300 meter hurdles and Janelle McElhany finished fifth. Payne came in third place in the long jump. Renee Struthers came in third in the high jump, fourth in the 1(H) meter hurdles and third in the 8O0 meter run. Joni Mitchell was fifth in the 12(H) meters. Bergstrom came in third place in the 4(H) meters and Cammie Papineau was fourth. The medley relay team of Orr. Bergstrom Papineau and Struthers finished last. For the seventh grade boys, who had 10 team points compared to first-place Helix with 88. Columbia Jr. High won easily with 124 team points and Heppner had 29. Cathy Lindsay led the team from Heppner with a second place finish in the shot put, fourth place in the high jump and fifth place in the long jump Wendy Powell was third in the 4(H) meter run. Hepp ner's 400 meter relay team finished first. In the eighth grade boys competition. Greg Orr led the team with a fourth place finish in the high jump and a fourth place finish in the 3(H) meter hurdles. Mark Way was third in the softball throw. Steve Curtis was fourth in the 100 meter hurdles and Achie Lucas fourth in the 1(H) meters. Pat Struthers came in fifth place in the 12(H) meter run. Stephi Payne of Heppner qualified for the ltKl meter run with a time of 13.8 seconds. Mark Meyers from lone qualified in the 151X1 meter run with a time of five minutes. Shawn LaRue. also of lone, will participate in the 15(H) meter race-walk at state as he walked the distance in 7:45.81. Mary Kincaid of Heppner qualified in the high jump at five feet and Beth Heatherly qualified for her age division with a mark of 3-8. Heatherly also qualified in the long jump with a leap of 12 feet. All of the other qualifiers are from Columbia Jr. High in Boardman. Brenda Pettigrew qualified in both the long jump at 15-1 and the discus at 75-3. Tyler Trumbell qualified in three events as he won the discus at 115-4, the long jump at 17-10. and the shot put with a throw of 40-2. Tracy Burg qualified in the discus at 69-7 and Rich Gilbertson also qualified at l(-6. But there were hundreds of other youngsters who partici with a throw of 79-1. Patti Taylor set a school record in the 3(H) meter hurdles, a new event in the girls competition. Other letter winners on the girls team include Lisa Meyers. Diane Morter, Ann Forwood and Cindy Hill. For the lone boys track team. 13 team members received letters. Awarded were Robin LaRue, Terry Starr. Jerry Rietmann, Mike Conklin, Larry Snider. Gregg Rietmann, Duane district Pilot Rock won that boys division with 115 team points and Heppner had 23. Condon Angels in 1st place in Little League Condon's Angels are in first place in Heppner Little League standings with a 4-0 record after beating the Hepp ner Giants 4-3 and the Fossil Rangers 10-R in games played last week. The Heppner Braves are in second place at 3-1 after smashing the Rangers 32-12 and beating the Heppner Dodgers 12-4. The Heppner Giants are in third place at 2-1. Heppner's Dodgers are in the fourth position at 2-2 after beating the lone Indians 10-2. The Indians are 0-3 and the Rangers are last at 0-4. 1 ft I r I II I A pated in the Junior Olympics in the four age catiigories. Qualifying times and marks were established by using the fifth-place marks at the state Junior Olympics last year. All students who beat those times or marks are going to the state meet. In the 10 and under hoys competition, Scott Jones won the 100 meters with a time of lfi.2 seconds with Tim Hays second and Shane Burres , third. The state qualifying time was 15.5 seconds. In the 400 meters, Burres was first at 1 : 18.6 with Bryan Padherg second and Jim Brosnan third. The mark was 1:12. Oan Struthers won the high jump with a leap of 3-4 with Steve Arbogast second and Bryan Padnerg and Craig Angell tied for third. Struthers also won the long jump at 11-3 with Angell second and Burres and Ryan Duncan tied for third. In the 10 and under girls competition. Beth Heatherly won the 100 meter dash with a time of 15.8 seconds with Theresa Fifield second and Dava Green third. The state mark needed was 15 6 sec .onds. Fifield won the girls 400 Fetsch. Jeff Hams. Les Thompson. Shawn LaRue, Jim McCabe and freshmen Denny Starr and Craig Gutier rez. Jim McCain set a school record this year in the 4(H) meters with a time of 52.9 seconds. Terry Starr set one in the discus with a toss of 136-1 1'-... Robin LaRue set a record in the 3IH) meter intermediate hurdles with a time of 41 7 seconds. The 4(H) meter relay team of LuRue. Hams. Fetsch. and Gregg Rietmann set a record. Participating at state were Jerry Rietmann in the (Kile Kathy Thomas' inspections are worth looking into. They save PGE customers about $1 million each year. In the 11 and 12 year-old boys competition. Loren Hays won the loo meters in 14.55 seconds with Alex Lindsay second and Trent Harrison third. The stale mark needed was 13.8 seconds. Hays also won the 200 meters with a time of 31.66 seconds, just off the state qualifying time of 29 seconds. Todd Lindsay was second. Alex Lindsay won the 400 meter run with a time of 1:12 with Harrison winning the second place ribbon and Hays placing third. The state quali fying time was 1 :07. Tony Clement placed first in the H(H) meters with a time of 2:48.5 with Stan Sporseen second and Alex Lindsay third The stale mark was 2.35. In the shot put, Scott Buschke placed first with a the Year vault. Robin LaRue in the 110 and 3(HI hurdles. Gregg Riet mann in the 2(Hi meters and La Rue. Gregg Rietmann, Hams and Fetsch in the 4(H) meter relay. In previous years, members of the team set other school records. Ia's Thompson. Gregg Riet mann and Robin LaRue were on the record set ting 16(H) meter relay team. Larry Snider holds the school record in the :i,lHMl meters. Heatherly placed first in the 400 meters in 1:18.4 with Lana Reid Recond and Dana Reid third. The state mark was 1:09. Cindy Jones qualified for state in the boo meters with a time of 2:43.
