Seniors camping trip may be cancelled The Heppner Neighborhood Center says that a disappoint ingly few seniors have made reservations for the projected three-day camping session at Cutsforlh Park from June 30 to July 3. Pat Hrindle says that if more seniors do not ind 'lc positive interest very soon, the camping project w ill be -cancelled She has great hope that at least 50 persons w ill sign up by June 1. She is not involved in student govern ment at Heppner High School either, Boardman student named to Honor Band A Boardman student, Cheryl Stubblefield. was amoiing four Blue Mountain Community College instru mental music students who were named to an Honor Band that performed at a confer ence of the College Band Directors National Associa tion in Kugene -st week. The 50-member band was composed of students from six northwest slates. The pioneer Vinson Family, numbering considerably more than KM) persons who will serve as hosts, completed their planning last weekend. Iaw Vinson, one of the eleven children of Klza and Emma Vinson and their oldest living son, who is bringing 18 members of his own family from California, will serve as the master of ceremonies. Lee's three younger brothers who will attend with their families are L.D. Walter Vinson of Monument and the twins Delbert T. of Ixxington and Darrell T. of Little Butter Creek, chairman of the litHO reunion committee. Everyone is invited to gather at the fairgrounds to enjoy visiting before the potluck dinner. Food service is planned to start at l p.m. The afternoon's program will include appearances by Father John O'Brien, Gene Rietmann, Ola Mae Groshens, Bob Stevens and daughter Jpjean, and County Judge Don McElligott and will feature an address by State Sen. Kenneth Jernstedt from Hood River. Prizes will be presented to special guests. The Heppner Lions Club, The Soroptimists International of Heppner and the Heppner Garden Club are assisting the host family with arrangements for the reunion. 6th graders Sixth graders at Heppner Grade School will have an auction to buy articles do nated by television and movie stars this morning at 9 a pt. The auction is the highlight of a year-long reading pro gram set up by teacher Brenda Weygandt. Students have comple ted book reports for reading done outside of class and Weygandt has given them grades in the form of fake money. A savings took was established for each student. Students will now have the opportunity to bid for the keepsakes vith the fake monev. ''"" 11 1 " """"""I Hill Kennv Student earns $500 award from teachers A former Heppner High School student recently re ceived a $500 Morrow County Educational Scholarship. Bill Kenny, a freshman at Oregon State University tak ing music and math, was selected for the county-wide scholarship. Everyone Welcome! plan auction Some of the items donated by stars include a necklace from the Commodores, arti cles from the Portland Trail blazers, a Laverne and Shirley tee shirt, a Robby Benson scrapbook and an auto graphed picture from John Travolta. Two of the most valuable items were stolen recently, Weygandt said. A Henry Winkler tee shirt and letter are missing. Students wrote to the stars and asked them to donate articles for the auction. After the auction, they are planning to write thank-you letters to the stars for their participa tion. He was the valedictorian at Heppner High last year. Seniors in high school and former students are eligible for the award, which is given for students anticipating be coming teachers. Dale Holland and Dean Skillicorn were given Math Awards for their scores on a national math examination. Paula Palmer was named the Outstanding Chemistry Student and Dale Holland was the Outstanding Senior Sci ence Student. Rock Hound Awards for excellence in identifying rocks and miner als were presented to Harry Groshens. Larry Palmer. Pat Clark and Doug Garrett. r Library awards went to Debbie Marquardt, Melanie Seitz. Sherrie Cowett, Glenn Smith. Andy Gorman. Randy Osborne. Chris Pennington. Dianne Samples. Shawn Cow ett and Darrell Miles. Miles was also awarded for work as a video technician for sports with Shawn Cowett the video assistant. In music, band director Bruce Martin presented awards for students who did a "superb job" at the District Band Festival. Honored were Paula Palmer on the French horn. John Bier on the trombone, Kim Miller on the bells, and Jim Angell, Mark Launer and Dawna Devin on percussion. Alice Abrams was the best actress in a single performance. Dan Nix was the best supporting actor and Karen Kenny the best supporting actress. Duane Neiffer was the most improved actor. The best all around drama person was Dale Holland. JoJean Stevens was awarded for her work in music with the drama plays and Mardell James was hon ored for work as stage manager. Kevin Schick was lone students win aeademie awards Academic Awards were gi ven at lone High School last week. Larry Snider and Terry Starr won the Science Awards and they also won the Math Awards. The Ionian Award, for work on the lone annual, was presented to Chris Cheney, Carol Cheney and Kathy Gutierrez. Tim Holtz won the Business Award for work in accounting. The seniors were repre sented by Tanna Hams, who presented the class history; Gutierrez, who presented the class will; and Glen Krebs, who presented the class pro phecy.
