Sports banquet Monday Heppner High School is planning its All-Sports Awards Banquet May 19at 6:30p.m. in the high school cafetorium. A pot luck dinner is planned. Awards will be given for the spring sports and other sports during the year. The public is invited. Jim Parker, Dan Nix and Mary Kincaid qualified to attend the State A Schools Track Meet in Portland this weekend after finishing in the top two at the District 7-A Track Meet in Umatilla last week. Parker.came in first place in the shot put with a throw of 51-7. more than six feet further than the second-place throw. He also came in first place in. the discus with a toss of 140-7. Parker qualified for state in another event, the triple jump, after leaping for a mark of more than 39 feet. Nix qualified for state by finishing first in the 1.500 meter run in a time of 4:17.2. His mark set a new District 7-A record. He demolished the old mark set last year of 4 : 23.3 by Mark McKinley of Pilot Rock. "I was very pleased with his performance especially since he has had some problems running this year," Coach Dale Conklin said. Nix just missed qualifying in the 3.000 meters as he finished third with a time of 10:03. Kincaid qualified for state with a jump of five feet in the high jump. It was the second time this year she has jumped that height Margaret Kincaid set a Heppner school record in the KK) meter high hurdles with a mark of 18 1 seconds, good enough for fourth place in the district final heat. In a preliminary heat the previous day. she broke the record with a time of IB 2 seconds. Coach Conklin said the Heppner team had some other "outstanding efforts" from team members. Sophomore Earl Hammond was third in the javelin with a throw of 156-2. which is his best throw of the year and a record for a sophomore at the school. Hammond also placed sixth in the long jump. Kellie Hammond placed third in the discus with a throw of 97-7 and fourth in the javeiin with a toss of 102 feet. Todd Sherer led most of the way in the 800 meter race but he just missed going to state as he placed third with a time of 2:03 9. Conklin said he was also pleased with the performance of Mike Jones as he qualified for the 100 meter final but did not place. Jones also just missed placing in the triple jump as he was seventh. Suzie Jacobs also just missed placing in the long jump with a leap of 14-2. Heppner's boys team placed fifth in the district meet with 57 points. "We scored very well consi dering the lack of boys on the team." Conklin said. "We did about as well as we possibly could have." The girls team scored 22 team points. "Considering the fact that we have no seniors on the team . if we can keep the young girls interested in turning out. we could have a lot of potential for the future." Conklin said his team mem bers that are going to state should be "very competitive" looking at marks from other district meets in the state. The budget reflects an increase of 35' per $1,000 of assessed valuation for the property taxpayer. Hence, the owner of $50,000 home would have his taxes increased by $17.50. The major increase in the budget is in the County Road Department. In addition to the funds proposed for the resealing of 60 miles of existing paved roads, as well as rebuilding sections of East Wilson Road and Olsen Road, it is planned to update the maintenance of all county roads, so that they will receive attention on a timely basis. This program is to include the grading of gravel roads, patching of paved roads, culvert cleaning and guttering on all county roads. This is the first year of a proposed five-year plan to update the Morrow County road system. Your support of this vital program is needed-now! Any further delay in updating the county road system will prove extremely costly for all of us. We urge you to support the progress in the County Road Department. Vote yes on the county budget next Tuesday, May 20.
