F.IC.HT The Ileppner Gazette-Times, Ileppner, Oregon, Thursday, February 21. 1980 'First time in 7 years .1 - ! 3 eppner upsets eston-McEwen Heppner pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the Columbia Basin League season with a 57-48 win at home against Weston-McEwen. "It is the first time in at least seven years that we have beaten Weston-McEwen," coach Dale Holland said. The game started out with both teams playing tight and making numerous turnovers as the score was only 8-8 at the end of the first quarter. Heppner scored all of its shots from the ouside on tosses by Jim Parker, Todd Sherer and Dale Holland. Coach Holland started the five seniors on the team : Todd Sherer, Larry Palmer, Jim Parker, Dale Holland and Curt Day instead of the usual starting lineup of Parker, Day, Holland, John Bier and Doug Holland because it was the last home game for the seniors. The score stayed close in the second period with the game being tied and the lead changing back and forth until Heppner took the lead 21-20 after trailing 17-12, which was the TigerScots biggest lead in the game. Heppner went on to lead 27-24 at halftime. Heppner increased its lead to 39-32 at the end of the third quarter and then outscored the visitors by two in the fourth period to win by nine points. Jim Parker led the scoring making 7-of-13 field goal attempts and making 8-of8 from the foul line for a total of 22 points. Day scored 11, John Bier 8, Palmer 6, Dale Holland (;. Todd Sherer 2 and Doug Holland 2. Heppner made 15-of-18 from the foul line and made 21-of-48 from the field. Weston-McEwen made 21-of-42 from the field. Heppner had more rebounds, 38-38, with Dale Holland grabbing nine to lead the squad. Ken Devereaux led the losing team with 22 points. It was Weston-McEwen's second league loss. Heppner played ,at Pilot Rock the night before and the league leading Rockets came out on top 70-54. Pilot Rock broke open a close game in the second and third quarters. The home team led 14-10 at the end of one quarter but opened up a 32-21 lead at halftime. The Rockets poured in 20 points in the third quarter to lead 52-34 and Heppner outscored Pilot Rock in the final period 20-18. Dorian Forrar came off the bench to score 12 points making 4-of-4 from the line and 4-of-8 from the field. "He played a good ball game," Coach Holland said. Parker scored 11, Dale Holland 8, Doug Holland 6, Day 5, Bier and Jim Launer 4 each, Todd Sherer and Tony Currin 2 each. Heppner made 12-of-18 from the foul line and 21-of-56 from the field and Pilot Rock made 12-of-16 from the line and 29-of-50 from the field. "We had a lapse in the last four minutes of the second quarter that put us down for the rest of the game," Holland said. The Mustangs closed out the year with two away games this weekend. The team tra vels to Umatilla tomorrow night and plays in Maupin against Wasco County Satur day night. Heppner trails the league leading Pilot Rock Rockettes by three games but the Fillies lead the TigerScots by two games with two games re maining so Heppner has assured itself of a second place finish and playoff berth. The team is away for both games this weekend playing Umatilla tomorrow night and Wasco County Saturday. Wasco County is a power in the Western Division of the CBL. Don Barber's team came out on top 50-42. Dan Coiner scored 14, John Mc Cabe 12 and Jamie Sands 10 with Don Papineau leading the losers with 10. Steve Powell beat Roger Britt 65-43 with Bill Meyers scoring 14, Dana Heidamann 13, Brent Eggars 12 and Powell 11 for the winners and Jay Coil scoring 14 and Dick Devin 12 for the losers. Jim Lankford beat Rick Johnston 61-41. Dave McLach lan scored 18, Dave Allstott and Lee Padberg 13 each and Lankford 11. Bryan Marlin scored 13 and Jerry Cutsforth 12 leading Les Schwab in its close game against Laverne Van Marter's team, which came out on top 59-53. Van Marter scored 16, Mike Stookev 15 and Mark Huddleston 14. This Sunday Powell plays Les Schwab (2-7: p.m., Lankford (9-0) (5-4) at 5 plays Smith (5-4) at 6 p.m, Johnston (3-fi) plays Van Marter (8-1 ) at 7 p.m. and Britt (0-9) plays Barber (4-5) in the final game at 8 p.m. Boy-Shoe' 1ST rmm m tra ill The Heppner High School Goldtrotters dance team has been entertaining sports fans all year during halftimes at the football and basketball games. Kitty Coon is the advisor and Paula Palmer is the captain. Lynn Dee Devin is the first lieutenant. Other dancers on the team are Kaedene Hollomon, Susan tira v. Carolyn Plocharsky, Susan Johnson, Kellie Hammond, Patti Toombs, Dawna Devin, Paula Fortenberry, Kim Miller and Heather Winter. The (ioldtrotters performed a medley of the routines they have done this year at their final home performance Saturday at halftime of the Weston-McEwen game. The group has been selected to perform at the district tournament in Pendleton Feb. 28 and 29. The lead stretched to 24-15 at the end of three quarters and both teams scored 10 points in the final period. Heppner made only 6-of-16 from the foul line but the Tiger-Scots did even worse making l-of-5. Alice Abrams led the team with 11 rebounds and 9 points. The guard duo of Lynn Dee Devin and Mary Kincaid scored 8 points each. Geri Grieb scored 6, Sandra Ward 2 and Lottie Laughlin 1 point. Kincaid had four assists and Devin seven steals in the game. Pilot Rock The night before at Pilot Rock, the Fillies were humbled by the Rockettes 54-30. Robyn Lavender led the home team with 24 points, 11 in the final quarter. Kellie Hammond led Hepp ner with 11 points, Kincaid and Grieb scored 5 each, Devin had 4, Abrams 2 and Sandra Ward 3. Devin had four steals and Kincaid had three assists.
