We agree, it is time fpr 4-H'ers to be getting their act together if. they .are planning to be a part of the fair action. County fair premium bookr shduld be mailed to a'l 'etfrolled 4-H families in the immediate future.. .so many questions will be answexed when they are received, if your premium book does not arrive in the next two weeks, it would be a good idea to call 676-9642, Extension Service, or Nancy Bruch, Fair Board Secretary. All 4-H exhibitors planning to show lambs in the market class should have their lambs shorn at least 30 days, but not mot e than 60 days prior to the fair. Mosts contests and exhibits are the same as in past years, with the exception of the 4-H foods contests. Many changes were made in this fair activity so they are identical to state fair. All leaders were mailed copies of the changes early in the 4-H year. We encourage clubs and individuals to call us at any time they have a question... We are here to help. Right now Senior New President Doris Golly horn presided at her first meeting as chief officer of the Morrow County Senior Citi zens Advisory Council on Wednesday, June 27, in the lone United Church of Christ basement mealsite. Council members and ECOAC staff members heard the monthly reports from each county mealsite representa tive and from the homemaker and nutrition staff. Hollin Reynolds, Pendleton, Director of the Area Agency on Aging, announced that after July 1, when the new budgets are implemented there may be some changes in various functions. Considerable discussion time was spent considering how the Senior Citizen Bus in Morrow County could best serve as many senior and handicapped citizens as pos sible. The matter of sched uling regular trips to Herm iston or Pendleton was men tioned. WithBirdineTuIlis Mr. and Mrs. Butch Laughlin, Heppner, will travel to, Can ada with other delegates from Gilliam, Wheeler and Sher man counties, to participate in an exchange program. Leaving Oregon on July 23rd, the group will travel with County Agent Ken Killings worth to spend a week with host families in the Fraser River Valley of British Col umbia. Later, Canadian members will return "the exchange to the four county area. One member from each county each year is selected to participate. Cindi Bergstrom, Heppner is on "stand-by" as an alternate for the exchange if a member from one of the other three counties chooses not to participate. We know Lottie will have Citizen tion committee, said that the best usage of the bus is being carefully considered by that committee. Paul Jones said that there is no news about the possible selection of a new site for senior activities at Heppner. Council members voted to change from monthly to bi-monthly meetings begin ning after the next meeting which is scheduled for Mon day, July 23, at Irrigon. The plan was adopted in an effort to cut travel time and expense and to conserve gasoline. The Wednesday evening dinner at lone, which visiting council members enjoyed along with the usual lone participants, was arranged by the women of the Willow Creek Grange. They set the attractive tables and served the meal. Irene Crabtree read a humorous poem. Sue Jepsen arranged for place favors and door prizes which were donated by the Oregon Wheat Legue. Special Visitor in County Last week, we were delight- ed to have John Abell, new 4-H specialist, visit our county. John arrived in Oregon from Kansas on June 11th, to fill the position vacated by Lois Redman on the state 4-H staff, and immediately scheduled his time out to visit as many Oregon 4 H camps as possible. We anticipate great things after the opportunity to visit with him and look forward to his return to our county again soon! Food Preservation Helps Available How does your garden grow? Now is the time to preserve! 4-H Horse Show Scheduled for July 29 Looking ahead. ..the first fair event for the county will be the Morrow County 4-H Horse Show, July 29th. A full day of competition for mem bers. ..get it on your calendar and plan to attend. 911 extended to Boardman area Businesses and residences can now dial 911 and reach Morrow County emergency services in the Boardman area, according to County Sheriff Larry Fetsch. But some of the pay telephones in the north end community don't have the capacity yet and Don Burns, a planner for the Eastern Ore gon Association of Counties is working on expanding the system with telephone tech nicians of Eastern Oregon Telephone Company. While the 911 system is 99 percent complete, the two year project to update Morrow County's emergency commun ications system is only 50 percent complete because of delays in delivery of new radio equipment at the Sheriff's Department, Fetsch said. Vistors at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Warner were their son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Cyril Mclellan. Mclellan's mother arrived from Springfield, Mo. and Mrs. Mclellan will continue on to her home in Canada. At the Chester Wilson home their grandchildren, Tom Jere and Jeffrey of Boise, spent the week fishing in the Columbia River and chased a few jack rabbits. Their parents, Mr. AFS searches for An "experience" in inter national or cross-U.S. rela tions without leaving town that's what AFS International Intercultural Programs is of fering Heppner families. Heppner Soroptimists are searching for families that will host students from over seas or from other parts of our country. The young person will live with the family and attend classes at Heppner High School. "The main requirement for an AFS host family is the Sheriff said, the dispatchers will be able to talk directly to ambulance drivers and the hospital's base station linked electronically with the sher iff department's radio system. The dispatchers can now talk directly with fire engine operators and the Umatilla emergency radio operators which handle Irrigon's 911 system. Boardman 's 911 system has been in effect for about a week. So far, a public infor mation campaign hasn't been launched informing residents of the new system. Fetsch was trying to track down the necessary com ponents Friday. Coupled with the expected arrival of two new hospital ambulances August 13, the county's emergency radio system is nearing completion. A family may acquire new prospectives about another culture, exper ience the fun of a new and continuing friendship, help a student discover the life of a community and a nation asside from food costs and possibly some small incident al expenses, the host family incurs no debt in hosting a student. The local chapter raises an annual fee which when sup plemented by whatever con tributions the student can afford covers AFS program expenses. AFS also extends a monthly allowance directly to the student to cover incidental personal expenses. The or ganization makes sure host families will not have to pay medical bills for students. As a matter of policy, AFS extends medical coverage to its students. Host families may take a monthly tax deduction in accordance with provisions made by the United States Internal Revenue Service. There is very little expense to a host family. He spilled gasoline on his pants which ignited as berried to light the arrow. He was taken to St. An thony's Hospital in Pendleton and transferred to Portland's Emanuel Burn Center on Thursday with first, second and third degree burns. Some will require skin grafting. She and her husband were members of the Peace Corps in Africa for a few years before coming to Heppner. During Thursday's program, Mrs. Schubothe wore an African dress and exhibited handicrafts, pre paring African delicacies such as papaya and kele wei for the children. The summer storyhour pro gram has 2 weeks remaining. It is scheduled on Thursdays from 10:30 to 11 a.m. for preschoolers through age 9. Marion Abrams and Choloe Pearson will be the next storytellers. He will be a senior at Riverside High School next year. Giyy Gordanier spent 5 days in the hospital in La Grande to correct an injury to his knee. Many of the books are Caldecott Award winners. Joy Krein, Choloe Pearson and the Heppner Library Association expressed their appreciation Thursday for the donations.
