EIGHT The Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon, Thursday, June 21, 1979 5-Day Plan To Stop Smoking -a success in Heppner By Joyce Crasser A 5-Day Plan to Stop Smoking has ended success fully in Heppner. The last evening closed with a gradua tion, complete with diplomas. The word "commencement" holds a very real meaning for them, for it truly is the beginning of a new way of life. The class was conducted by Bill Poole, pastor of the local Seventh-day Adventist Church, and assisted by Ailoen Saunders, nutritionist from Hermiston who came, together with her daughter Vicki, also a nutritionist (having recently earned her Master's degree in nutrition), each evening. Also greatly appreciated were Dr. Gifford and Dr. Snyder i Hermiston). who took time out from 'their -busy programs to explain some of the physical effects that cigarettes have on everyone concerned. It was not a large class, but a very serious one. Some had tried to quit before and failed; some had succeeded, only to start again and discover they couldn't quit this time; and some were there because their physician had told 'them, "Stop or else." And succeed they did, al most one-hundred percent. Just one man did not receive' his diploma that evening. He cut down from two packs a day to four cigarettes, and seemed to reach a plateau of four a day. However, he did not seem at all discouraged, and informed everyone, with a twinkle in his eye, that he would be free before summer was over. Leader Poole told him his diploma was waiting for him as soon as he called to say he had succeeded. A week later he was still smoking four a day. Then one day his wife, w ho is very allergic to tobacco smoke, called Mr. Poole to say her husband had asked her to call and request his diploma; that was his birthday present CowBelles recipe for meatballs a good one The "Beef for Father's Day" promotion organized by the Morrow County CowBelles Association at the Central Market and Court Street Market was well received Friday, according to mem bers of the group. Using the Hawaiian meat ball recipe from the local CowBelle Cook Book, the lady demonstrators passed out free samples of the tasty meat balls. Demonstrators included Mrs. Norma French, presi dent of the local CowBelles, Ruth Nutting, Anne Schwarz and Sue Riddle.
