lone nine top Sherman County The Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon, Thursday, May 3, 1979 NINE Jr. High catapult contest tests students innovation From the moment the first player stepped up to bat the Cards were in control of the ballgame, when they met Sherman County last Friday. Robin LaRue, Kevin Mc Cabe and Danny McElligott were the first three up to bat and the first three to make it home. Dennis Stefani was out on a fly and Les Thompson. Barney Rea and Shawn LaRue came on in to put six points on the scoreboard before the Cont. on page 12 The second annual 8th grade catapult contest drew a large crowd and a variety of innovative machines used to send projectiles distances ranging from a couple of inches to more than 20 meters. Syreece McLean, junior high science teacher, said catapult designs were engi neered better and egg contain ers were vastly improved over last year's event. Eggs were p ;nside specially construct ed containers and were check ed after being launched to see if the egg was intact after its launch and subsequent land ing. Students had five weeks to design and complete their projects which ranged from' fish poles (the winning cata pult, constructed by Shawn Gibson and Michael Johnson) to complex hand-cranked, all metal catapults such as the one Mardel James built. Junior Cards drop Stanfield, grab 6-2 mark for season Ione's junior high baseball . team took a doubleheader from Stanfield Monday to end the season with a 6-2 record. The Junior Cards won the first game 2-0, and took the second contest by a 3-1 margin. Troy Lindstrom pitched a no-hitter in the first game, with Craig Gutierrez giving up only one hit while striking out five and walking only two in the second game. Gutierrez ended the season with a 4-0 mound record for the fledgling Cardinals. In the first game, Ione's scoring began in the first inning, after a Junior Card walked, Denny Starr singled, and Donny Taylor drove in two runs with a base hit. Starr and Taylor accounted for the only two hits for lone. lone started out hot in the second game, after Roger Morter walked, then scored on a hit-and-run play off Gutier rez double. The Junior Cards came back in the third inning, when Donny Taylor singled, stole second and third, then scored when a Stanfield pickoff play misfired. The remaining lone run came on another Stanfield error. Stanfield threatened during its last turn at the plate. With two men on base, a Stanfield batter drilled a long fly to the outfield, which was caught by an lone fielder, who picked off a base runner to make a double play. Last week, the Ionians beat Heppner 7-6, and lost to Condon 6-8. Coach Bob Deeter praised the efforts of the 6-2 junior high team, noting the out standing mound performance of Gutierrez, and the consist ent hitting abilities of Donny Taylor, Denny Starr, Troy Lindstrom and Gutierrez.
