The second annual 8th grade
catapult contest drew a large
crowd and a variety of
innovative machines used to
send projectiles distances
ranging from a couple of
inches to more than 20 meters.
Syreece McLean, junior
high science teacher, said
catapult designs were engi
neered better and egg contain
ers were vastly improved over
last year's event. Eggs were
p ;nside specially construct
ed containers and were check
ed after being launched to see
if the egg was intact after its
launch and subsequent land
ing. Students had five weeks to
design and complete their
projects which ranged from'
fish poles (the winning cata
pult, constructed by Shawn
Gibson and Michael Johnson)
to complex hand-cranked, all
metal catapults such as the
one Mardel James built.

Junior Cards
drop Stanfield,
grab 6-2 mark
for season
Ione's junior high baseball
. team took a doubleheader
from Stanfield Monday to end
the season with a 6-2 record.
The Junior Cards won the
first game 2-0, and took the
second contest by a 3-1
margin. Troy Lindstrom
pitched a no-hitter in the first
game, with Craig Gutierrez
giving up only one hit while
striking out five and walking
only two in the second game.
Gutierrez ended the season
with a 4-0 mound record for
the fledgling Cardinals.
In the first game, Ione's
scoring began in the first
inning, after a Junior Card
walked, Denny Starr singled,
and Donny Taylor drove in
two runs with a base hit. Starr
and Taylor accounted for the
only two hits for lone.
lone started out hot in the
second game, after Roger
Morter walked, then scored on
a hit-and-run play off Gutier
rez double.
The Junior Cards came
back in the third inning, when
Donny Taylor singled, stole
second and third, then scored
when a Stanfield pickoff play
misfired. The remaining lone
run came on another Stanfield
error.
Stanfield threatened during
its last turn at the plate. With
two men on base, a Stanfield
batter drilled a long fly to the
outfield, which was caught by
an lone fielder, who picked off
a base runner to make a
double play.
Last week, the Ionians beat
Heppner 7-6, and lost to
Condon 6-8.
Coach Bob Deeter praised
the efforts of the 6-2 junior
high team, noting the out
standing mound performance
of Gutierrez, and the consist
ent hitting abilities of Donny
Taylor, Denny Starr, Troy
Lindstrom and Gutierrez.
