'i J ! 5 . 1 i " a . -- IS Legislature tour well received by County women Want to know what is happening down at the Legis lature? Forty three women from Morrow and Umatilla counties can tell you! After a long day in Salem, meeting with Eastern Oregon legisla tors, the governor, and visit ing the Senate and House of Representatives, as well as committee hearings, they are well informed. Boarding a bus at 5 a.m., the women arrived in Salem in time for the opening cere monies in both the Senate and House. Lunch in the Blue Room with Senator Ken Jern stedt, Representative Bill Bel lamy, Senator Mike Thorne and Representative Jack Duff allowed time for many ques tions. Following the luncheon, each had the opportunity to visit with Governor Atiyeh in the Governor's Office, as well as visit committee hearings and view the county exhibits and art displays in the Capitol. What kind of questions do women ask of the Governor and their elected legislators? There were many related to roads and taxes. Arrangements for the Extension-sponsored day in Salem were made by Mrs. Mike Thorne and Senator Thome's secretary, Kathy Rock. Those attending from Mor row County were Virginia Rosewall, Garnett Huddle ston, Marge Shade, Mildred Wright, Mary Wright, Birdine Tullis and Ms. Courtney. 4-H'ERS TO ATTEND "KNOW YOUR STATE GOV ERNMENT" Two Morrow County 4-H members will join with those from all over Oregon in learning all about state gov ernment next week. Lori Witt, Irrigon, and Jeff Bailey, Heppner, will represent our county at the conference, which allows older members to spend two full days at the Legislature. Housing will be at the 4-H Sandwiches and salads featured in March study groups "Fun with Salads and Sand wiches" will be the discussion topic for study groups in Umatilla and Morrow counties in April, according to Exten sion Home Economist Molly Saul. Emphasis in the lesson will be innovative ways to make sandwiches and salads more appealing and more nutri tious. The use of sprouts to add interest to meals will be explained. Demonstrations will be given on the making of sprouts from a variety of seeds. Ways to avoid monot ony in "brown bag" lunches will be discussed. , Mrs. Saul encourages all interested persons to attend on of the 24 study groups in the two-county area. Membership is not required. Volunteer leaders who will teach the lesson recently received their training from Mrs. Saul and Birdine Tullis, Morrow County Extension program assistant. Local leaders are: Nancy Rogers, Pat O'Brien, Irrigon; Mary Roberts, Betty Hack, Lexington; Judy Stevens and Mary Wright, Heppner. REMINDERS TO 4-H MEM BERS WITH BEEF Weigh-in days for 4-H Beef animals have been scheduled for April 7 for those in North Morrow, and April 14 for South Morrow. Both days include additional events of interest to all livestock members, with a tour of Gantenbein Dairy at 2:30 p.m. on April 7. A livestock judging contest and fitting and showing demon strations will be offered at 1 p.m. on April 14. Members may weigh their animals at the most convenient place. SUMMER WEEK INFOR MATION MAILED All enrolled 4-H members seventh grade and older should have received an interesting bit of information from us the past week. That would be their registration form, and information con cerning 4-H Summer Week at Corvallis, June 11-16. Infor mation is also included in the senior age letter concerning teen staff at State Fair, and other summer events and activities. We encourage all 4-H mem bers to return the application forms to the county office just as soon as possible. SEW SOMETHING SPECIAL Thursday, April 5 is the big event for learning to "Sew Something Special." The pro gram starts at 10:30 a.m. Everyone is welcome to. at tend. No charge. Workshops will include applique, t-shirts, pants, down garments, mach ine embroidery, cathedral quilts and blazers. Bring your pencil and note pad and your lunch.
