11 Wednesday, March 28, 1979 - ELEVEN PayLess Variety Popular Pay Less Drug made its debut in Hermiston last July and has established itself as a popular attraction at the Hermiston Plaza Shopping Center. "We're pleased with the pub lic's response," said Mike Farrar, manager, who was on hand for the opening of the approximately 35,000 square foot facility. The most popular feature of the store, said Farrar, is the "variety" of merchandise it car ries. Pay Less has developed its store around the "mall-in-one" concept with separate depart ments for cameras, toys, sport ing goods, hardware items, auto motive parts and accessories, pet supplies, garden and plant supp lies, major appliances, records and cosmetics. There is also a well-stocked pharmacy with a pharmacist on duty during the store's regular -"vV T "T Iff Bob Kuin fef and MiTce Farrar Herald photo) operating hours, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. Farrar said the store employs two full-time pharmacists and one that works on a part-time basis. Mike is also a pharmacist and is capable of filling in when the need arises. Farrar said the store was "tailored" to the area's needs. "We want to be a local store and a part of the community," he said. Mike is starting his seventh year with Pay Less. He managed a Pay Less store in Klamath Falls for about Vt years before coming to Hermiston. He is a graduate of the University of Montana. Assistant manager is Bob Kuhn who was transferred from the Pay Less store in Lewiston. He's been with company about nine years. Shari's Offers 'Dressy Decor' Shari's, Hermiston's newest family-style restaurant, has been doing a brisk business since opening at the Hermis ton Plaza Shopping Center. "We've been completely full" at times, noted manager and part-owner Marty Briones. She remembers one Saturday when each booth was used about four times during the lunch hour. She feels one of Shari's biggest drawing cards, in addition to its "excellent location," is its atmosphere. She feels it has a "lot more dressier decor" than the aver age family restaurant. High, raftered ceilings help project a "warm, open feel ing," she says. But the indiv idual booths are situated to allow diners to relax in rela tive privacy. The exterior of the hexagonal-shaped building and surrounding landscpaing also projects a stylish image. The landscaping includes small shrubs and trees. An instant lawn was planted with strips of sod. The restaurant was de signed and constructed by Hermiston resident Ron Berg- quist, who named it after his wife. He plans to use the same name for other restaurants he hopes to build. Construction of the second Shari's should begin in Sher wood, near Portland, within a month. Two others could be built this year also. Having five or six restaurants open within a few years has been discussed, according to Mrs. Briones. Shari's menu, which in eludes dinners featuring steak, seafood, chicken and pork chops, is priced to fit a family's budget, she says. The prices will allow "the whole family" to enjoy a restaurant meal more often, she adds. Families won't have a hard time finding a place to sit. None of the booths seat less than four people. Booths for two aren't really very comfortable, notes Mrs. Briones. Most couples would rather have a larger table, she feels. Although Shari's doesn't have a banquet room, some booths can seat eight to 10 people. One can handle 15 to 20. Total seating capacity is about 120. The kitchen is designed to accomodate two cooks when necessary. Shari's is open for business 24 hours a day, seven days a week, holidays included. Mrs. Briones has about 15 years of restaurant experi ence, including three years as manager of the Blue Bucket. She has worked in Seattle, Portland and San Francisco.
