The Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon, Thursday February 22, 1979 ELEVEN Cattle skin disease eliminated from Oregon county Scabies, a skin disease of cattle, has been eliminated from the two infected Klamath County herds where it was found in December, but Oregon Department of Agri culture officials, ranchers and feedlot operators are contin uing to be alert for evidence of any new cases, according to John Nordheim, Morrow ' County Livestock Agent. Ore gon, however, is still on the list of states with outbreaks. Dr. Glenn Rea, state veteri narian, said that the Klamath County cases have been traced to a California feedlot and a herd in that state. Oregon is presently consider ing whether a quarantine should be placed on cattle entering from California. Dr. Rea said a recommendation will probably be made at the Klamath Falls meeting, on Feb. 7, on whether a quaran tine should be imposed. If California cattle are quaran tined, Oregon will require all cattle in herds from there known to have the disease or from herds in contact with the disease, to be dipped twice before entering Oregon. The dippings would have to be under the surveillance of Oregon officials. Cattle coming from endemic states must also be dipped at least twice at 10 to 14 day intervals in an authorized solution. Such cattle must be shipped within 10 days of the last dipping and must not have been exposed to other cattle while waiting shipment. Cattle scab is caused by the mite Psoroptes scabei and has become widely diffused, af fecting a large number of animals in some areas. The small mite burrows into the animal's skin and can cause great economic loss to cattle men. If an animal is not treated there can be a decline in its weight and health with death resulting from second ary infections in extreme cases. Scabies is related to the other marines such as demo dectic, chorioptic and sar coptic. Differential diagnosis is done with the aid of a microscope. Oregon's hist known out break prior to the one in Klamath County was in 1977 at a Nyssa Feedlot. Before that Scabies was confirmed in Columbia County in 1961. Presently, standing quaran tines have been placed on the states of Texas, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Colorado. In addition, California, Arizona, Wyoming, South Dakota, Kan sas. Cattle from these areas must not be imported without having been dipped twice, under supervi sion, with an approved prod uct within a ten to fourteen day interval. The second dipping can be accomplished upon arrival in Oregon if previous arrangements with the Animal Health Division of the Oregon State Department of Agriculture. Spud diversion program extended The U.S. Department of Agriculture has extended until Feb. 23 its $2 per hundred weight payments to growers who divert russet potatoes to livestock feed or starch, Secretary of Agriculture Bob Bergland has announced in Washington, D C. Payments in the potato diversion program, initiated by the department to offset price-depressing effects of the fall crop potato surplus, were originally scheduled at $2 for the first 30 days, Jan. 15 through Feb. 13. and $1.75 for the second 30 days, Feb. 14 through March 15. Secretary Bergland said the higher payment was being extended because unusually severe weather has prevented growers from diverting the volume planned. Only ,.alf the 9 million hundredweight auth orized had been diverted by Feb. 12. Payments for the remainder of the program Feb. 24 through March 15 will be at the $1.75 rate. The amendment to the polalo diversion regulations extending the $2 payment also provides a clarification of adequate livestock pasturing as a basis for payments for potatoes diverted for spring grazing. County fair seeks carnival Members of the Morrow County Fair Committee and the Heppner Lions Club are actively seeking a carnival to appear at this year's fair, but they aren't having much luck in finding one. Larry Mills, Lions Club president, said, "Our fair dates conflict with many of the bigger shows and, naturally, the carnival operators have to go where the money is."
