" -, . season nears end !! ., ; - - . j I'm -w.M.,. um up.-.n-B-m., v - ' ' "V ' - J' ' , i - - v f i ; 1 v ' , x 1 1 at 1978 Morrow County Modeo Good weather and good riders prevailed last weekend to make the 1978 Morrow County Rodeo a success.- A total of 208 rodeo perfor mers took part in the weekend WRA-sanctioned contest, in hopes of winning some of the $6,414 in prize money. Kyle Robinson and Neil Beamer took the top two places in the race for all around cowboy honors at the Morrow County Rodeo. Robinson scored 508.83 points including WRA wins to reach first place, with Beamer logging 245.57 to finish second. Robinson, a Sand Hollow area cowboy, won a cash award from the Orville Cuts forth family and a revolving trophy for his all-around efforts. Tim Daly captured the Morrow County amateur calf roping title this year, winning the coveted Severe Brothers engraved saddle donated by Kinzua Corp. Donnie Papi neau finished second in that event, followed by Dave Daly. The Morrow County Team roping event was almost a carbon copy of last year's contest, with Neil Beamer and Kyle Robinson taking first, Bob Mahoney and Royce Fulleton winning second, and Cornett Green and Lee Anso tegui capturing third the same finishing order as in 1977. Cow riding top honors went to Lee Rice, followed in second place by his brother, Law rence, and Mike Currin in third. Ron Currin Sr. won the wild cow milking contest, with Max Hellberg placing second and Dick Rice third. Morrow County's open calf roping event was won by Neil Beamer with Ron Currin Sr. placing second. ' In the junior division barrel race, Anita Palmer took first place honors, followed in second by Trisha Mahoney. The senior division crown was captured by Janice Healy, with sister Maureen finishing second and Dawn Peterson taking third. Mike Currin won the break away roping event, with Jana Steagall, top-rated cowgirl in the Western States Junior Rodeo circuit, placing second. Three local riders Neil Beamer, Kyle Robinson and Dr. Joseph Gif f ord is pleased to announce the opening of a family practice at the Heppner Medical Clinic, North Thompson Way, on Tuesday, September 5, 1978. Anita Palmer won .the kids' race at the rodeo grounds Friday night, followed by Kris Pettyjohn in second and Tammy Holtz in third. On Saturday, the cow pony race was won by Katrina Ray, with Debra Palmer second and Roy Camargo third. The cow pony race on Sunday was won by Roy Camargo, with Cheri Hansen in second and Fred Berry in third. Saturday's cowgirl race was won by Katrina Ray, with Debra Palmer second and Cheri Hansen third. On Sun day, the event was won by Miss Palmer, with Cheri Hansen second and Cammie Papineau third. HHS posts volleyball schedule for 1 978 season Sept. 12 will mark the opening day for Heppner High School's volleyball season, when the Mustangs will face Wasco County in a home game. Coach Jerry , Martin requ ests that all players complete physical exams prior to the practice scession. The season's opening game for the lone Junior High squad will by Sept.21. The Elgin Stampeders besr ted the Umatilla Sageriders in pony express races on Satur day and Sunday, but the Sageriders outdid the Elgin team in the baton relay race on both days. In the WRA open show, Gary Bruhn finished with first place money in the saddle bronc event, with Jim Parvin placing second and Bill Blue and Brad Holsington splitting third and fourth place money. Sid Britt won the bareback bronc competition, followed by Sam Hull in second and Hiram Mulrony in third. Splitting fourth, fifth and sixth places were Joe Talburt, Tim Roeser and Bruce Davenport. Jana Steagall is currently rated first in the senior division all-around race, with Trisha Mahoney standing sec ond in the junior division, followed by Brett Sherer in third. A total of 17 Morrow County cowboys and cowgirls have qualified to compete in the coming weekend's Western States Junior Rodeo Assn. Fi nals, to be held in LaGrande. Trisha Mahoney, Tara Maho ney, Brett Sherer, Cliff Dough erty, and Jana Steagall have each qualified for the finals in five events. Janice Healy has qualified for four events, with Cindy Dougherty and Mau reen Healy each qualifying for three. Lawrence Rice, Rocky Steagall and Brad Huwe all qualified for two events, with Ron Currin, Wayne Huwe, Lee Rice, Anita Palmer, Mike Currin and Marty Britt all qualifying for one event. During the season's final rodeo of the regular season last weekend in John Day, ju nior division winners included Brett Sherer, first in steer dobbing and fifth with Cliff Dougherty in team roping; Cliff Dougherty, second in barrel racing and tied for second in calf riding; Trisha Mahoney, fourth in team roping, fifth in barrels, sixth in poles; Tara Mahoney, third in steer dobbing. Senior division point win ners from Morrow County included Janice Healy, first in barrels and fifth in breakaway roping; Maureen Healy, sec ond in barrel racing and fourth in steer dobbing; and Kathleen VanSchoiack, sixth' in pole bending. Actionat the Sept. 1-3 finals in LadBrande will determine the all-around winners and top performers, in each", of the junior rodeo events. Four saddles will be awarded the top-rated performers.
