The Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon, Thursday, August 17, 1978 THREE State police arrested a Hardman area man and woman last week on charges of cultivating marijuana on a Burton Valley area farm. Charged with manufacture of a controlled substance were Brant Cornwall Engbert, 31, and Roni Boyer, 27, Armed with a search war rant for the farm, troopers discovered more than 40 maturing marijuana plants growing in pots in the farm house, in a garden outside the home, and in a makeshift greenhouse. The two suspects await action in Heppner Justice Archie Padberg Archie Padberg, 73, Hepp ner, died in Pendleton Wed nesday, Aug. 9. i He was born Feb. 16, 1905, in Weston, Ore., the son of John Henry and Dora Delia Lieual len Padberg. He spent his early years ranching in the Lexington area. He also spent many years as a mechanic on farm equipment for area ranchers. He was married to Mildred Harrison Tucker on Dec. 31, 1955. Mr. Padberg was an ardent outdoorsman who loved fish ing, hunting and camping. Funeral services were Fri day, Aug. 11, in the United Methodist Church with the Rev. Steve Tollefson officiat ing. Carl and Betty Marquardt sang "How Great Thou Art" and "In the Garden", accom- M uriel Runnion Muriel Runnion, 81, Hepp ner, died in Heppner Thurs day, Aug. 10. She was born at the family ranch in Sand Hollow Feb. 10, 1897, the daughter of William and Luella Turner McCarty Granville, who came to Ore gon from California in 1882. She lived in Morrow County most of her life and was a member of All Saints Episco pal Church. Private cremation services were held Aug. 10. A memorial service was held Saturday, Aug. 12, at All Saints Episco pal Church with the Rev. Kenneth D. Miller officiating. Sacred selections were sung by the congegration. Mrs. C.C. Thieves entered a garage at the Judson Coppock place off Hwy. 207, about 10 miles north of Lexington last weekend, making off with a large assortment of tools and a cassette tape player valued at a total of nearly $500. A 1963 flatbed farm truck was reported stolen from the Herbert Ekstrom ranch near lone last week. Casket bearers were Lind say Kincaid, Terrel Benge, Vic Groshens Sr., Woodrow Tucker, Gene Cole and Clay ton Ayers. Honorary bearers were Kenneth Marshall, Lin coln Nash and George Hinton. Concluding services and interment were at the Lexing ton Cemetery with Sweeney Mortuary in charge of ar rangements. Mr. Padberg is survived by his wife, Mildred, Heppner; two daughters, Juanita Ross, Hermiston; Lola Springer, Hood River; two sons, Archie Padberg Jr., Gresham; Ver non Padberg, Cornelius; two step-sons, Edwin Tucker, Sa lem; Eldon Tucker, lone; one step-daughter, Evelyn Ross, Canby; twenty grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren. Sweeney Mortuary was in charge of arrangements. She is survived by a son, La Verne Van Marter Jr., Hepp ner; three grandchildren, Marie Lane, Paul Van Marter and La Verne Van Marter III, all of Heppner; a step-son, Robert Runnion, Pendleton, and four step-grandchildren; two nieces, Elaine George, Heppner and Frances McCar ty, San Francisco; and a nephew, Paul McCarty, Port land. Mrs. Runnion was preceded in death by her husband, V.R. Runnion. Contributions may be made to the Oregon Cancer Fund or the Pioneer Memorial Hospi tal Fund. Results! The men, John Valum, 21, and Wayne Woodnancy, 20, are named in Morrow County warrants charging them with first degree burglary, in connection with the Aug. 7 theft of a shotgun, a rifle and a jar filled with coins from the Heppner apartment of Delano Hodgeman. The weapons were repor tedly recovered by Alameda County Sheriff's deputies. The two suspects listed no perma nent address. Ruth Van Winkle Private graveside services were held Saturday, Aug. 12, at Heppner Masonic Cemetery for Ruth S. Van Winkle, who died Aug. 10 in Heppner after a long illness. She was born May 10, 1928 at Council, Idaho, and had been a resident of Heppner for the past 38 years. Mrs. Van Winkle is survived by her husband, Jack, of Heppner; sons, John, of Her miston, Jim and Benham Donald Norden Word has been received here of the death of Donald A. Norden, 50, Boise, Idaho, a rancher in the Monument area of Grant County for many years. Mr. Norden was killed in a plane crash in Idaho Thursday, Aug. 10. Mr. Norden was reared in the Redding area of northern California, and had lived in Boise the last five years. Suzonne Japwi, JP sets new bad check policy Heppner Justice Court Judge Dee Gribble has institu ted a 'new, tougher, policy towards dealing with worth less check offenders. Under the new policy, offen ders will be required to make restitution for checks issued with non-sufficient funds, hen pay a $50 fine, plus $5 in court costs. If restitution is not made within a set time frame, violaters can expect a 10-day jail term. Morrow County law enforce ment officials currently re quire merchants who receive bad checks to notify, if possible, the check writer, and seek restitution within 10 days. If the bad check writer does not respond, he or she is then arrested and brought to court. The number of worthless checks being passed in the county has risen dramatically in recent months. Guest minister at lone Church of Christ The lone United Church of Christ will welcome the Rev. Harold Bodle as guest minis ter for the 10 a.m. worship service on Sunday, August 20.
