The Morrow County team will compete with six Hermis ton teams, as well as squads from the Stanfield-Echo area and Umatilla. A 16-game Errors cost Cards Condon thrasing A rash of costly errors by the fledgling lone Cardinals resulted in a 17-3 thrashing at the hands of conference lead ing Condon during a May 5 home game. The 10-run rule was invoked after five innings, ending the game early, and perhaps saving some face for the beleaguered lone squad. lone scored all three of its more sports Saddle sores to aid Cystic Fibrosis Morrow County schoolchil dren, their parents, and other adults will be participating in a 12-mile "horse-a-thon", braving saddlesores and wea ther to raise money for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. The event is scheduled to start at 10 a.m. May 20, from the Morrow County Fairgrounds in Heppner. Prizes, including belt buck les, bridal reins and halters have been donated by. local businessmen to riders turning in the most pledge money for the fund raising event. T shirts emblazoned with "I Did It" will be awarded to all riders turning in $25 or more in pledge money. Sponsors of the. event said there is still time for riders to participate in the event. Participants must fill out sponsor sheets available from area schools, or from Pat Wright in Lexington or Bobby Angell in Heppner. Morrow County finished last year's season 7-7, with a team consisting mainly of 13-year-olds. Expected to return for this year's season are Doug Holland, John and Bob Bier, runs in the first inning, on singles by Greg Rietmann and Robin LaRue, followed by a homer by Kevin McCabe. Despite the lopsided score, the Cards outhit Condon, but lost ground by tallying seven run scoring errors. lone was scheduled to face Sherman on Tuesday and Heppner today, in hopes of capturing its first conference win. on page 12 wear comfortable clothing, and to bring a sack lunch. Cookies and soft drinks will be served at a lunch site. To register, participants must bring their sponsor sheets with them on the day of the ride. Riders under 18 years of age must have a release consent form signed by their parent. Parents are urged to accompany their more youth ful riders. The May 5-6 competition saw seventh-seeded Thomp son advance to the quarterfi nals, after drawing a bye in the first round, beating Debbie Emerson of Oregon Trail in second, and overpower ing Pam Burns of Baker 7-5 and 6-3 in the third round. During the quarterfinals Over the by Cindy Kerr Willow Run golfers from Boardman visited the Willow Creek course in Heppner May 7 for the first mens' interclub competition of the year. The highlight of the day was a hole-in-one by Ed Heimstra. Heimstra's ace also accounted for the closest to the pin award on the third hole. Jeff Edmundson's 64 was low gross for Heppner. Second low gross went to John Edmundson, and third to Craig Cooley. Low net was won by Kevin Rountree with a 40. Second went to Francis Dougherty and third to Elmer Palmer. In other girls' action, Ione's Jeanie Piening lost to Mac High's Darla Dribble in the first round. In boys' competition, McEl ligott and Stefani defeated Creek and Berria of Ontario 6-3, 6-2 in the first round, then went against number one seeded Harshman and Koop of Pendleton in split sets 2-6, 6-1 and 2-6. Cardinal Rick Gilbert over whelmed Riverside's Mark Danies 6-1 , 6-0 in the second round of singles competition, after drawing a bye in the Tee Cup Closest to the pin on the second shot was Jerry Sam ples. Long drive winner was Jeff Edmundson. For Boardman, Jim Harper was low gross winner. A second place tie went to Jim" Thompson and Dallas Wilson, with Carroll Donovan placing third. Low net winner was Rod Flug, followed by Earle John son and Ron Daniels. Closest to the pin winners were Rod Flug and Dallas Wilson. Flug also won the long drive competition.
