Morrow County Invitational With several key perform ers missing from the competi tion, Heppner had little chance to defend its overall team championship in Satur day's Morrow County Invita tional track meet. Still the 11-member Mus tang contingent racked up 46 points to place fifth among the . 15 teams and coach Dale Conklin cited an "overall good performance considering the size of the team". Filly coach Sherri Brock had similar words for the five girls who competed in the meet, saying, "There weren't a lot of points but there were a lot of good efforts." Heppner's highest indivi dual placing was turned in by distance runner Dan Nix who was second in the two-mile with a time of 11:02.8. Team mate Scott Sherer was fourth in the event with an 11:19.0 clocking. In the mile run, Todd Sherer placed third with a time of 4:54.7 and was follwed by Nix in fourth place at 4:59.6. Dennis Peck placed in two events, taking fourth in the long jump with a leap of IS'7'2" and fifth in the javelin at 151'5". Sam Myers also picked up two ribbons with a 43.9 clocking in the 300 intermediate hurdles for fourth and a time of 55.6 in the 440 for sixth place. Myer's time in the hurdles set a new school record. Jim Parker turned in a personal best of 43'9" in the Lady Cardinals add to tennis win string 9 boys split Ione's girls tennis team extended their match win string to three over the weekend by downing both Arlington and Sherman Coun ty while a slimmed down boys team dropped their match with the Honkers before coming back at full strength to top the Huskies. Traveling to Arlington Fri day, the lady Cards notched wins at both the number one and three singles positions as well as the top two doubles slots to gain a 4-3 victory. Susan Thompson recorded the number one win with an 8-0 shutout of Darcy Wetherall and Carol McElligott won her number three match by an 8-2 margin. Playing at number Darcy Rea lost 8-4 and Michelle McElligott came up short at number four by an 8-3 score. Winning doubles combina tions for the girls were Carol McElligott and Darcy Rea in the top slot and Natalie Tews and Jeanie Piening at number two. The number three team of Martha McEIiigoU and Michelle McElligott was edged out 9-8. The lone win for the lone boys came at the number one singles position where Clint Carlson topped the Honkers' Mark Soule 9-8. Stuart Keene lost at number two by an 8-2 margin and the only doubles match found the Card team of Mike Leavitt and Jerry McEl ligott losing 8-4. The Cards bounced back the next day to sweep all three doubles matches and post a 5-3 win over visiting Sherman. Heppner's mile relay team of Allen Fortenberry, Brett Sherer, Dan Nix and Sam Myers finished sixth with a time of 3:59.9. A total of five meet records fell in the boys portion of the meet including the high jump Heppner's Dan Nix leads the pack at the half-mile point in Saturday's 2-mile race. Nix finished second in 11:02.8. two match 6-4, 6-4 and Mike Leavitt and Duane Fetsch took an 8-5 win at number three. In singles play, Rick Gilbert lost to Dave Simantel 6-4, 6-1 in the number one match. Dennis Stefani and Dan McEl ligott recorded respective 6-4, 6-0 and 8-1 wins at numbers two and three while Jerry McElligott and Duane Fetsch lost in the numbers five and six slots. Clint Carlson took the number one singles match by a 6-0, 6-3 margin and Duane Fetsch sealed up number two, 8-1. The Cards won the only doubles match played as Rick Gilbert and Dan McElligott teamed up for a 7-5, 6-3 win. Although number one sin gles player Susan Thompson won her match 3-6, 7-5, 7-5, the rest of the singles points all went to Oregon Trail. Kim Cofenas lost as number 2, 2-8, Jan Peterson dropped number 3, 3-8 and number 4 Natalie Tews fell 5-8. Edmundson fired a 71 on his three trips around the six-hole course. Par for the round was set at 65. FEDERAL DEPOSIT INSURANCE CORPORATION Ponies clip Cardinals in Junior High baseball A couple of win streaks collided Monday afternoon in lone and it was Heppner's Ponies that kept theirs going by dusting the Jr. Cards 7-3 in junior high baseball action. Both teams entered the game with three consecutive wins and a lot of runs behind them but the Cards were handcuffed by the five-hit pitching of Doug Holland. Craig Gutierrez went all the way on the mound for the Cards. Heppner tagged him for two runs in the second and two more in the third before the Cards came back to close the gap in the bottom of the third with three runs. The Ponies iced the win in the fifth by scoring three more times. Heppner got on the board first when Holland singled, stole second, reached third on an error which put Dorian Forrar on base and then scored ahead of Forrar on a couple of wild pitches. The Ponies racked up two more in the third when Don Lott singled, Rick Klaus was hit by a pitch and both were sent home on Holland's second hit of the day. In the bottom of the third the LaRue who covered the 330 intermediate hurdles in 45.0 to place fifth. In addition to his record, LaRue placed fifth in the 120 high hurdles with a time of 18.2 and sixth in the high jump at 5'6". Cardinal points also came from Greg Rietmann's 37'7,2" triple jump which placed fourth. " Before joining the lady Cards record-breaking relay, Lisa Meyers set a new mark in the 880 where she placed fourth in 2:43.8. Ione's best individual placing came from Grace McElligott who finished second in the two-mile with a time of 14:03.0. Howard Leavitt reached sec ond on an error, Roger Childers drew a walk and Don Taylor's single knocked Lea vitt home. Craig Hams fol lowed with a single to bring Childers home and John Murray pounded a double for the third run. Heppner closed out the scoring in the fifth as Lott, Klaus and Holland all singled and then made it home on errors and wild pitches. The Ponies came into the game fresh off a 24-6 rout of Riverside Thursday. Don Lott was the winning pitcher, tossing a one-hitter at the Pirates. Heppner jumped out to a six run lead in the first inning and continued on the attack as Lott slugged three hits in five at bat, Doug Holland went two for four including a double, Rick Klaus was two for five with a double and Dorian Forrar was one for two with a double and two RBIs. In earlier games, the Ponies sunk Oregon Trail behind the one-hit pitching of Pat Parker who recorded nine strikeouts. Holland went three il . f : . . In the season opener, Holland and Parker pitched, the Ponies to a 10-3 win over Riverside and Lott, Holland and Forrar each went three for four. .j, lone had opened the season with a 6-1 loss to Riverside but then turned around to beat the Pirates 7-1 in the second gamp as Craig Gutierrez allowed only one hit. Thursday, the Cards swept a double header at Arlington, taking the first game 7-6 and coming out on top in the second by a 54 margin. lone had to battle from behind in the opener, scoring three runs in the bottom of the fifth to nip the Honkers. Gutierrez and Jeff Hams shared the mound duties and also starred at the plate, going 1 for 3 and 2 for 3, respectively. Mary Kincaid contributed with one hit, two walks and three runs scored.
