FOURTEEN-The Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon, Thursday, April i;;, 1978 Mm taing 2nd at Condon ranglers host second playday Heppner held a six-point lead in learn standings going into the final event of the Condon Invitational track meet Saturday, but the Mus tangs got swamped in the mile relay and had to settle for second best. Joseph High School gained 10 points for the relay win and wound up with a team total of 116 four points ahead of Heppner. The two squads outclassed the rest of the 12-team field as Wasco County finished a distant third with 65 points. Richard Schmidt paced the Mustangs with a first and two seconds to cop the high point individual performer award in the meet. Schmidt's win came in the long jump where he leaped 20'8".'He placed se cond in the high jump at 6'4" and was runner up in the triple jump at 42'11'a". Both efforts set new junior class records. Heppner's other first place finish came in the 440 relay where the team of Buck Estes, Mike Jones, Schmidt and Bryan Marlin crossed the line in 47.6 seconds. Other high-pointers for Heppner included Marty Smith who threw the shot 48'tt'a" tor a second place and recorded a 15311" javelin toss which placed third. Smith also took sixth in the discus at 107'7':". Sam Meyers ran the 440 in 56.0 to finish second and came back to take third in the 330 hurdles with a time of 43.33. Bryan Marlin's long jump of 20' '" was good for third place, as was his triple jump of 41'4". A 10.8 clocking in the 100-yard dash earned him a tie for fourth. Jim Parker's 117'7" discus fling and 42'4" shot put earned him a pair of fourths while Dave Piper aiso picked up a fourth by going 5'10" in the high jump. Todd Sherer put together an unusual double by taking third in the mile in 5:04.1 after having earlier finished fifth in the pole vault at 9'. Distance specialists Dan Nix and Larry Palmer placed third and fourth, respectively, in the two-mile with times of 10:59.4 and 11:21. The lone points for lone in the meet came from Terry Starr's 152.5" javeline throw which placed fourth. Fillies 2nd, lady Cards 8th ; Mealy, McElligott post wins With Maureen Healy and Diane Holland providing most of the scoring power, the Filly tracksters racked up 74 points to finish in the runnerup spot behind Oregon Trail's team leading total of 84 in Satur day's Condon Invitational. Grace McElligott turned in a winning performance in the two-mile to lift the lady Cards to an eighth place finish in the 12-team field. Healy was named the top individual girls performer of the meet, as the Heppner junior picked up three firsts and a second for a total of 38 points. Her wins came in the high jump where she crossed the bar at 5'5", the 440 where she was timed in 64.7 and the 220 where she recorded a 27.1 effort. Holland tossed the javelin 103'7" to place second in that event, while her 31'9" shot put was the third best of the meet and her discus throw of 84'11" placed fourth. Other point scorers for the Fillies included Laurie Harri son who finished fourth in the 100-yard dash with a time of 12.46; Kellie Hammond, fifth in the javelin at 84' ; and Susan Johnson, fifth in the low hurdles with a time of 35.6. Heppner's 440 relay picked up four points by finishing fourth. In addition to McElligott's 14:19.05 victory in the two mile, the lady Cards gained points from Lisa Meyers, who finished third in the 880 with a time of 2:46.6 and Janet McElligott whose 76'3" discus toss placed sixth. The Morrow County Wran glers held their second play day, and potluck of the year April 9. Good weather and lots of excitement was enjoyed by all. A meeting of parents and prospective coaches has been scheduled for Monday, April 17, beginning at 7:30 p.m. in the Heppner Elks Lodge. Two coaches and several assistants are still needed for the four-team league.
