SIX-The Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon, Thursday, March 16, 1978 lone atheletes honored HHS scoreboard drive underway A large crowd packed the lone High School cafetorium Monday evening as coaches of fall and winter sports teams recognized the accomplish ments of the school's athletes. Principal Chuck Starr said it was Ione's first attempt at holding a sports dessert after a sports season instead of making end of the year awards and he added he was pleased with the large turnout. Special presentations made by coach Barbara Stefani to her girls volleyball team included : Leading Scorer, Robin Leavitt; Top Defensive Player, Grace McElligott; Top Offensive Player, Susan Thompson; and Most Im proved, Tanna Hams. Grace McElligott and Susan Thomp son were also recognized for being selected as Honorable Mention performers on the Big Sky Conference All-Star team. S , V. if I S Heppner High School and the Heppner-Morrow Cham ber of Commerce have kicked off a bond drive aimed at raising enough money to replace the dilapidated score board in the high school gymnasium. Chamber mem bers will be assisting in the project in which $10 bonds can be purchased towards financ ing two new scoreboards. The bonds will be repaid by halftime drawings at both the varsity home football and basketball games. Three bond holders will be drawn at each game until all bonds are repaid. The bonds may also be in the form of a tax deductable donation and recognition will be given to each donor on a donor board which will also be placed in the gymnasium. Two scoreboards will be purchased one for the north west corner of the gym and one for the southeast corner with one of the scoreboards providing the team and indivi dual foul information in addi tion to the score, time and quarter. The scoreboard committee, chaired by D.O. Nelson, and including Ray Boyce, LeRoy Gardner and John Sporseen is hoping to have $2,500 in bonds sold before the June 1 delivery date for the new scoreboards. First team all-conference performers for the Cardinals were Robin LaRue and Terry Starr while Dennis Stefani and Gari Gaustad made the second team honor lists. Presenting awards to Ione's third place girls basketball team was coach Martha Doherty who recognized Grace McElligott as Leading Scorer; Susan Thompson as both Leading Rebounder and Leading Free Throw Shooter and Natalie Tews as Most Inspirational. Coach Del LaRue presented awards to Ione's district runner-up boys basketball team and gave special recog nition to Leading Scorer Dennis Stefani ( 15.8 points per game ) , Leading Rebounder Kevin McCabe (204 rebounds) and Assist Leader Dennis Stefani (71 assists). Dennis Stefani and Grace McElligott were both named to the top flight roster of All-Stars while Kevin McCabe and Janet McElligott were named to their respective second teams. Honorable Mention performers for the Cardinals include Danny McElligott, Robin LaRue, Susan Thompson, Darcy Rea and Carol McElligott. City League Results VanMarter and Eckman posted semi-final wins in the Heppner City League basketball tournament Sunday to move into the championship final scheduled for Sunday, March 26. La Verne VanMarter and Daryl Spivey split 36 points and Bob Greene added 12 to lead VanMarter past Summers 70-48 in the first semi-final. Tom Day scored 15 and Tom Pointer added 10 for Summers. In the second game, Jim Lankford hit 21, Ken Eckman 16 and Dave McLaughlin 10 as Eckman topped Watkins 74-63.
