East Los Angeles has become one of the centers of the new mural movement in American Cities. The murals represented in the exhibit were painted by many differ ent artists and have many themes, often connected with the community's close ties with Mexican history and culture. Some of the murals make social or political state ments. Some show street scenes from the past and present, while others aim only to please the eye with bright colors and bold designs. Ricardo Garcia, an Oregon resident originally from east Los Angeles, returned home in 1975 to photograph the murals. A selection of the photographs he took is being circulated by visual arts resources, a part of the University of Oregon Museum of Art in Eugene. Visual arts resources pro grams are supported by the Oregon Arts Commission, the National Endowment for the Arts, the University of Ore gon, and other private and public agencies.
