lone Jr. High's girls basketball team put the finishing touches on an 11-0 season by
taking first place honors in the "A" bracket of the Junior High Basketball Jamboree held
Feb. II in lone. The Cardinals put away Riverside 31-6 and Heppner 22-11 to take the
tournament crown. Seated in the front row from left to right are: Liz McEIIigott, Bunny
Salchenberg, Sharon Crowell, Anita Palmer, Ann Murray and Diane Morter. Starting from
the left in the back row are Corby Sullivan, Margaret Doherty, Tammy Holtz, Michelle
LaKue, Mary Kincaid and Coach George Russel.
Norman Clow, a U.S. Fish &
Wildlife employe working out
of the Umatilla Refuge, re
turned recently from a threo
week training course at the
Federal Law Enforcement
Training Center, Glencoe,
Georgia.
The center provides training
and instruction to all federal
law enforcement agencies,
including the FBI, the CIA,
the IRS, the Border Patrol,
Game Commissions, park po
lice and White House guards.
All facets of law enforcement
and crime prevention, includ
ing firearms, self-defense,
drugs, rape, smuggling and
court procedures are covered
in the course.
Clow said a lot of crime
takes place on game refuges
and that he is very glad to be
working on a game area in
Eastern Oregon rather than in
one of the more populated
states.
The training center is lo
cated about 60 miles from the
Okefenokee Swamp and all the
Game Commission men got to
spend a day going through a
portion of the nation's largest
swamp.
Clow has worked nearly 20
years for the U.S. Govern
ment, having spent 19 years
with (he Forest Service before
starting to work for the Fish &
Wildlife Department last summer.
He and his family moved to
Irrigon last week after living
in Heppner for the past 12
years. His wife, Bonnie, has
her own dog grooming busi
ness and their Black Butte
Kennels have produced cham
pion Brittany Spaniels. She
plans to continue the groom
ing business in Irrigon.
In State -wide testing
Student skills gauged
Heppner High School jun
iors and Riverside seventh
graders will be tested on their
computing skills while lone
seventh graders will take a
reading test during the week
beginning Feb. 27. The exami
nations are part of the
State-wide Testing Assess
ment presently underway.
The county schools were
asked to participate in the
testing, designed to find out
exactly how much Oregon
students know in three areas
reading, writing and compu
ting. Approximately 12,500
fourth graders, 16,000 seventh
graders and 19,000 juniors in
Oregon are taking part in the
assessment with one-third of
each grade level tested in one
of the three areas.
The tests are set up to gauge
a student's ability to apply his
knowledge in a practical
situation, reflecting an effort
by Oregon Schools and the
State Board of Education to
better adapt education to life
after schooling is completed.
Students tested will receive
the results of the assessment
and teachers will use them to
help shape their instructional
programs.
Questions about the assess
ment may be directed to Mike
Witherell, Riverside High
School; Jerry Martin, lone
Junior High School; or Vi
Lanham, Assessment Coordi
nator, at Heppner High
School.

Mural photo exhibit set for HHS library
An exhibit of color photo
graphs of murals from the
east Los Angeles area will be
on display at the Heppner
High School Library Feb. 24
through March 17.
East Los Angeles has
become one of the centers of
the new mural movement in
American Cities. The murals
represented in the exhibit
were painted by many differ
ent artists and have many
themes, often connected with
the community's close ties
with Mexican history and
culture. Some of the murals
make social or political state
ments. Some show street
scenes from the past and
present, while others aim only
to please the eye with bright
colors and bold designs.
Ricardo Garcia, an Oregon
resident originally from east
Los Angeles, returned home in
1975 to photograph the murals.
A selection of the photographs
he took is being circulated by
visual arts resources, a part of
the University of Oregon
Museum of Art in Eugene.
Visual arts resources pro
grams are supported by the
Oregon Arts Commission, the
National Endowment for the
Arts, the University of Ore
gon, and other private and
public agencies.
