Sorority to sponsor bowling tournament Alley crown goes to BPOE team The BPOE bowling team of John Ledbetter, Bob Camp bell, Archie Munkers, Bob Hubbard and Dean Hunt rolled to a first place finish with 2,829 pins at the Heppner Bowling Association's 7th An nual Bowling Tournament held Jan. 20-22 and Jan. 27-29 at Heppner Bowl. The tourney was termed a big success, drawing 11 five-man teams, 56 doubles teams and 112 singles bowlers. The doubles combination of Bob Greene and Micky Kindle proved a winner, with the pair racking up a total of 1,154 pins to take home the first place doubles' trophies. Alpha Theta Sorority of Epsilon Sigma Alpha will sponsor a benefit Scotch Doubles bowling tournament with proceeds going to the Easter Seal Hospital and Training Center. The tournament will be held at Heppner Bowl on consecu tive Saturdays, March 4 and 11. Sessions will begin both place finish in both singles competition, with a series score of 610, and an all-events total of 1,748. Heppner Bowl finished sec ond in five-man competition with 2,781 points, followed closely by the Bucknum's team with 2,745 points. Finishing a close second in the doubles event were Jim Ackley and Ed Hiemstra, with a 1,149 score, followed by Al Bunch and Norm Diggins, 1,129 points and Ted Toll and Ernie McCabe, 1,112. " Bob Krein finished second behind Jamie Sands in singles competition with a 609 score, missing the first place trophy by only one pin. The top two days at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. In Scotch doubles, men and women bowlers team up, with the woman rolling the first ball and the man attempting to pick up the leftovers. Two dollars from each of the $5 per couple entry fees will go to the Easter Seal Hospital. Heppner's Fillies ig nored the fact they were playing a team that had twice beaten them in regular season play as they led Pilot Rock throughout the first half and took a four-point lead at intermission. Then in the third period, the Rockets began to show the Pendleton Armory crowd why they are the class girls team of the Columbia Basin Confer ence this year. A Pilot Rock press started to rattle the Fillies, forcing turnovers and mistakes. At the end of the third quarter, Heppner was four points down and from there the Rockets coasted into the state tournament with, a 55-40 win.' "We went into the game with a 'nothing to lose' attitude," , said Filly coach Sherri Brock. "In the second half when it looked like we had a chance to win, the girls got a little scared." Lady Cards nail down No. 1 lone used a big third quarter Friday to get the jump on Helix and put a lock on the top seeding in upcoming district tournament play. The 29-22 defeat of the Grizzlies was the lady Cards' fourth win in Big Sky play against one setback. Oregon Despite the loss, Brock said it was one of the Filly's better games of the year and she credited her team with deter mined play at both ends of the court. In addition to bringing home the district second place trophy, the Fillies also picked up the girls Sportsmanship Award, based on overall performance of team mem bers, coaches, cheerleaders ' and spectators. The Fillies hit only 23 per cent of their shots from the flood against the Rockets but they found the range on eight of 16 free throws. Lori Rhea and Maureen Healy both scored 12 points to lead Heppner while Jackie Molla han had five and Janice Healy added three. Mollahan and the two Healy's handled most of the rebounding for Heppner with each collecting half a dozen. In Thursday's opening round of the tournament, the Fillies again proved that season records can be tossed out the window when it comes "It wasn't an outstanding game for the shooters, but we had good movement with and without the ball and that was the key to the win," said Card coach Martha Doherty. lone hit only 12 of 53 shots for 23 per cent but still outshot Helix and also came out on top in almost every other statistic depart ment. Helix, Umapine lone grabs tourney slot Friday, the Cards moved a step closer to a slot in the district tournament by drop ping Helix 53-46 and the following night they clinched the berth by outshooting Umapine 79-61. lone outscored the Grizzlies in each of the first three periods and built up a 12-point cushion. The Cards toned down their shooting from the earlier season match with the Natalie Tews came off the bench to spark lone to a four point lead at halftime. T!.e Cards stretched the margin to nine after three quarters and went on to beat ine Grizzlies for the second time in two meetings this year. Darcy Rea led a balanced scoring attack for lone, col lecting eight points while both Tews and Susan Thompson had six, Carol McElligott four, Janet McElligott and Grace McElligott two and Michelle McElligott one. Thompson led the Cards in rebounding, grabbing nine boards. For the game, Mollahan ended with 11 points, Maureen Healy had 10, Janice Healy seven. Lori Rhea six, and both Julie Grieb and Diane Holland fall Grizzlies in which they fired up 71 attempts, but still, hit 21 buckets on 68 attempts for a 36 per cent clip. Helix totaled five less baskets in 70 shots for a 23 per cent effort. "We didn't take as many shots as I like us to but I think we made up for it at the line," said Card coach Del LaRue. lone canned 11 of 14 free throws for a hot 79 per cent. Earlier in the week, lone played a rare girls junior varsity game and rolled to a 24-5 win over Condon. All five of the varsity non-starters saw action with Natalie Tews hitting ten points, Martha McElligott, Michelle McElli gott, and Margaret Kincaid four, and Lori Edwards two points. In team shooting, the fillies hit 16 hoops in 54 attempts for a 30 per cent mark and connected on eight of 14 free throws. Cards in double figures, hit ting 18 points. Kevin McCabe scored 12, Robin LaRue 10, Dan McElligott nine and Rick Gilbert four. LaRue pulled down 14 re bounds, McCabe had 11 and McElligott grabbed eight as the Cards matched Helix's board total of 42. Stefani was credited with six steals and McElligott picked up four assists for lone. In Saturday's game with Umapine, spectators were ready to call the city fire department when both teams opened up with a sizzling first quarter shooting spree. Den nis Stefani hit six of seven opening period jumpers and lone as a team hit 12 of 18 shots for 66 per cent. The Cards' 25-point quarter score was one point short of the season high and staked lone to a nine point lead. Still hot in the second period, lone chalked up 23 more points and upped their lead to a 17-point margin.
