For the first 2"2 quarters of
the district championship
final, it was anybody's ball
game. Heppner's Fillies ig
nored the fact they were
playing a team that had twice
beaten them in regular season
play as they led Pilot Rock
throughout the first half and
took a four-point lead at
intermission.
Then in the third period, the
Rockets began to show the
Pendleton Armory crowd why
they are the class girls team of
the Columbia Basin Confer
ence this year. A Pilot Rock
press started to rattle the
Fillies, forcing turnovers and
mistakes. At the end of the
third quarter, Heppner was
four points down and from
there the Rockets coasted into
the state tournament with, a
55-40 win.'
"We went into the game
with a 'nothing to lose'
attitude," , said Filly coach
Sherri Brock. "In the second
half when it looked like we had
a chance to win, the girls got a
little scared."
Lady Cards nail down No. 1
lone used a big third quarter
Friday to get the jump on
Helix and put a lock on the top
seeding in upcoming district
tournament play. The 29-22
defeat of the Grizzlies was the
lady Cards' fourth win in Big
Sky play against one setback.
Jim Ackley and Norman
Diggins placed second and
third in all events . bowling
with respective scores of 1,743
and 1,730.
