Krein said about 80 per cent of the take so far has been spikes again the normal amount. The 6,000 hunters represent about a 20 per cent increase over last year and Krein attributed the hike to early closures in surrounding hunt ing areas due to low bull escapement levels. Virtually all of the game taken so far has been in excellent physical condition and the weather for elk season so far has been very good. It's something the kids will remember when they come back next year," lone coach Gordoan Meyers said of his team's 30-20 win at Dufur Saturday. "We've made a lot of improvements over last year and I think everybody has learned some lessons." Although Dufur is by no means regarded a powerhouse in the Big Sky Conference, a win is a win and this one enabled the Cards to finish with a 5-4 season mark. "I'm glad we had this game left after Arlington," Meyers said. "If we would have turned in the equipment after that one it would have really hurt our program." With virtually all starters returning next year the Cards have a lot to look forward to. Many of the freshmen who suffered through last year now have a taste of victory to bring into their junior campaign. "We still need to do some growing physically," Meyers said. "It would be good for a lot of these guys to come back about 30 pounds heavier next year." Of the Dufur game, Meyers said there was a big improve ment in the blocking when Terry Starr was moved to the guard position. "He's probably the best blocker on the team and that has been one of our weak points this year," Meyers said. Meyers said the Cards had good success when they stuck to basic plays.
