SIX The Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon, Thursday, Nov. 10, 1977 Mustangs wrap uap Condon Heppner atheletes honored Monday Heppner took on Condon, the cold and the point spread Friday and bested all three as the Mustangs . held up their end of the bargain in a bid for a conference championship. The 19-6 win over the Blue Devils gave Heppner the maximum number of points for the game under the Columbia Basin Conference tiebreaker system but unfor tunately Oregon Trail was not so cooperative in its contest with Sherman County. The Mustange chances for an outright championship rested on a six-point Blazer win but Sherman's 19-15 victory bought the Huskies a ticket into the district playoffs this week at Elgin. Heppner finished the year in sole possession of second place with a 6-2 conference mark one game behind the Huskies. Both teams had trouble generating much offense in the first half as efforts were hampered by the cold weather and a light rain. At intermis sion, the Mustangs held a three-point lead on the strength of Bob Smith's 29 yard field goal in the second quarter. Further into the game, Heppner warmed to the occa sion and wound up with 198 yards of offense to 122 for Condon. Quarterback Jerry Cutsforth connected on four of nine passes for 35 yards and Dennis Peck hit two of three halfback passes both good for touchdowns. Peck passed to tight end Dale Holland for the Mustangs first touchdown and later found Bryan Marlin for a 14-yard score. Peck was the leading ground gainer with 67 yards on 26 carries and Marlin picked up 64 yards on 13 runs. Holland, Marlin and Peck each caught two passes in the game. Most of Condon's yardage ' total was credited to Marion " Weatherford who gained 105 yards on 26 carries. Condon took the opening kickoff and moved to the Heppner 20 before Peck grab bed an interception on third down. The Blue Devil defense held, forcing the first of Marlin's five punts good for a 41.0 yard game average. Unable to move against the Heppner defense, Condon punted and the Mustangs drove to the 12-yard line aided by Marlin, Peck and Jim Kenny runs. When Peck was stopped for two yards on a third down draw play, Heppner settled for Smith's field goal and a three-point lead. Following an exchange of punts, Heppner took the offen sive when Peck deflected a Condon pass into the hands of Powell for the Mustangs second interception of the game. Peck then gained 11 yards up the middle but Marlin lost the ball at mid field. The Mustang defense again forced a punt to give Heppner another shot with two minutes left in the half. A deep pass to Marlin was picked off but the defense shut down the Condon attack forcing another kick. Coach John Sporseen called the contests of the year. with his second interception as the half ended. Heppner came out firing in the second half as Peck picked up a first down, Marlin ran for eight, Cutsforth kept the ball for another first, Peck went for seven and Peck passed 27 yards to Holland for a touchdown. Smith's kick up ped the Mustang lead to 10-0. The Blue Devils came back to move the ball to the goal line before the Heppner de fense dug in to hold on downs on a disputed fourth down call. After an irate Blue Devil fan ran on the field to protest what he thought was a touchdown, Condon was nailed with a 15-yard penalty, courtesy of the fan, and Heppner was given some breathing room. Two Heppner offsides penal ties moved the ball back to the six and Marlin punted to the 47 as the third quarter ended. An interference call gave Condon a first down at the 10 and the Blue Devils scored to close the gap to 10-6. Condon threatened again when a blocked punt was recovered at Sparetimers. Marty Smith nailed the Condon quarterback in the endzone for a safety and a 12-6 End of year golf tournament Nov. 19 Willow Creek Country Club will host its final golf tournament of the year Saturday, Nov. 19, beginning at 10 a.m. The event will be an 18-hole, medal play, cross-country event with the course layout completely rearranged from normal play. Mustang coach John Spor seen said it was one of the best efforts his team has put together and he had words of praise for all aspects of the Mustangs performance. "Our pass defense was excellent," Sporseen said. "That's been one of our highlights all year long." The Heppner secondary came up with four intercep tions in the game one by Dennis Peck, one by Jim Kenny and two by Bryce Powell. Condon was limited to one yard of passing offense in completing only one of 12 attempts. Following were Joedy Marlatt with 14, Marty Smith with 13, Jim Parker with 12 and Bryce Powell with 11. Sporseen said the defensive effort of the Mustangs was helped by a Condon offensive pattern which he called "very predictable". "In the first half they only used two formations one for running plays and one for passing plays," Sporseen said. "We could tell what was coming as soon as they came up to the line of scrimmage." Sporseen said the Blue Devils changed their pattern a bit in the second half. "It confused us for a little while but we were able to adjust to it."
