The Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon, Thursday, Oct. 13, 1977 SEVEN Cards swamp Wheeler 52-14 The lone Cardinals got off to a flying start in Big Sky Conference play, posting a 52-14 victory over Wheeler Friday in Fossil. The Cards scored in every quarter, including a 22-point burst in the second period, as r they upped their season re cord to 4-1. With 371 total yards 220 rushing and 151 ; passing lone overcame an outstanding performance by Falcon running back Rick O'Neal who picked up 235 yards on 36 carries. Relying almost entirely on O'Neal, the rest of the Wheeler runners were limited to 27 yards while the Falcon passing attack connected on only 2 of 10 attempts for 11 yards. For the Cards, Kevin Mc Cabe gained 98 yards on nine carries and completed two of five passes for 15 yards. Regular quarterback Dennis Stefani added seven comple tions in 10 attempts for 136 yards and three touchdowns. Standouts for the lone defense included Terry Starr who was credited with 12 assists and five solo stops, John Lindstrom with nine assists and five tackles, Mc Cabe with 11 assists and three tackles and Gari Gaustad with 10 assists and six tackles. The Cards first score came on a 10-yard Stefani to Danny McElligott touchdown pass with Stefani carrying the ball for the two-point conversion, lone increased its lead to 16-0 in the second quarter as Robin La Rue hauled in a 42-yard scoring pass from Stefani and the same combination provi ded the conversion points. A fumble recovery by La Rue and a 23-yard Stefani to McElligott pass play set up the Cards third score a six-yard run by Gaustad. McElligott handled Stefani's pass for the conversion and a 24-0 lead. After Wheeler got on the board with a 65-yard run by O'Neal, lone came back to score on a 52-yard pass from Stefani to Gaustad near the end of the half. Terry Starr opened the second half scoring with a 2-yard TD plunge with Stefani carrying for the conversion. Following another O'Neal touchdown, lone mounted a drive which ended with Stefa ni carrying for the score from the one. Stefani found McElli gott in the end zone for the conversion and a 46-14 lead. Gregg Reitmann closed out the scoring for lone on a 30-yard run as the Cards put a damper on the Falcon home coming activities. fKeglers) Korner Sparetimers League, Sept. 27 Team Standings: Won Lost Gardner's Fillies split matches Meyers, "No repeat. By Monday the three digit reminders were taped all over the lone Cardinals locker room hardly giving the play ers a chance to savor Friday's 52-14 Big Sky opening win over Wheeler. The signs read 69-6 and the message was clear lone has no intention of experiencing a defeat like the one administered last year by Culver, Ione's opponent today. This will be the Cards last shot at Culver before the team moves up to 11-man football and the Wheeler win put lone in high gear. The team demonstrated a scoring bar rage against the Falcons and managed to keep rampaging fullback Rick O'Neal out of the end zone for most of the afternoon. "O'Neal ran for a lot of yards between the 2Q's," Coach Gordon Meyers said. "But when he got down near the goal line we got kind of sticky." Meyers said he does not partici'larly like winning by such ,i wide margin but he explained that as long as O'Neal was in the game he had to leave his first line players in the game for safety reasons. Freshman Duane Fetsch suf fered a separated shoulder in the game and will be out the rest of the season. Glen Krebs will be out at least a week with a cracked rib. lone played what amounted to a seven man line with four down linemen and three tight linebackers to force Wheeler to pass the ball instead of going to O'Neal on three out of four plays. But the Falcons went to the air only 10 times, comleting two for 11 yards. Meyers said he was general ly pleased with his team's defensive play citing the work of Robin LaRue who blocked two punts and Terry Starr who was in on a game-high 17 tackles. With the Wheeler win behind them, the Cards have concen trated all efforts this week towards wiping out that three digit reminder and giving Culver a proper going away present. 12 4 Grain Growers 11 5 Sears 10 A Coast to Coast 9 7 Central Market 8 8 Jerry's Mobil 6 10 Peterson's Jewelry 6 10 Bucknam's Tavern 1 14 HIGHIights: Phyllis Cole, 212 Game Phyllis Cole, 548 Series Gardner's, 940 Team Game Gardner's, 2696 Team Series Sparetimers League, Oct. 4 Team Standings: won Los Gardner's le 4 Grain Growers 13 7 Sears 13 7 Goast to Coast 11 9 Central Market 9 11 Peterson's Jewelry 6 14 Jerry's Mobil a 14 Bucknam's Tavern 6 14 Split Conversions: Jo Pettyjohn 4 S-7 Millie Hanna 5 7 Bonna Rae Miller 5-10 Eva Griffith 5 8 10 HIGHIights: Roberta Klaus, 206 Game Roberta Klaus, 549 Series Gardner's, 925 Team Game Garnder's, 2705 Team Series The Heppner Fillies split their volleyball matches for the week, traveling to Moro to down Wasco County in straight games before return ing home to lose a three-game to Hermiston.
