Gale in Heppner, across from their home. Ed has tinkered with radio repair since about 1933, the year he took over manage ment of Gonty's Shoe Store from his father and even had a little repair shop set up in the store. The Gontys decided that 0 Irrigon Francis Rose The Meal Site Committee for the Senior Citizens dinners will hold a rummage sale on Thurs. and Fit Oct. 13 & 14 beginning at 9 a.m. through the days, at the Irrigon Lions Clubhouse. , The purpose of the sale is to raise funds to cover the expense of having the eight donated deer cut and wrapped and the cost of renting a locker. Donations for the rummage sale would be ap preciated. Jack R. Baisden began serving the communities of Irrigon and Echo as City Manager Sept. 27. He is employed under the C.E.T.A. program with the cities of Irrigon and Echo supplying part of the financing for his salary. Baisden was born and raised in Seattle. He attended Seattle University where he took business administration. He also attended Metropolitan Business College and the University of Calif. He has been a nursing home owner and administrator. They started putting up the new shop, storeroom and garage building last fall in preparation for their retire ment from the shoe business at the first of this year. Expecting to 'take it easy', in their new business, the Gontys have been putting in full time hours. They are enjoy ing their 'retirement' but not quite in the way they expect ed. Survey sent out During the next week, several households in the college district will receive an "Adult Vocational Interest Survey." The purpose is to find out what kinds of voca tional education classes adults would be likely to take. Because only a small num ber of surveys is being sent it is very important that most of them are returned. When the survey comes to your home, the college asks you to take a few minutes to fill it out and mail it back. Even if you are not interested in taking vocational training right now, BMCC needs to know your opinions. etc . and in Irrigon on odd days 1,3,5 etc. There may be times when he cannot hold to the schedule but in that case he will make up the time to the other city. Jane Maylinga retired probation officer, and Joan Clark, a retired physical therapist, entertained the Chamber with detailed des criptions of the geography and activities in their respective towns of Hythe and Folke stone, Kent, England. Both ladies belong to the Soroptimists in England and were introduced by Elaine George, former Heppner mu nicipal judge and correspond ing secretary in the local Soroptimist chapter. Heppner is 'sister club' to the English group Mrs. George and Jane Mayling had been correspond ing for ten years before they met rr r iV.V 3 1 1 iiti I i 1 $ I 1 m I m iiii L"i i Both women were honored by their Soroptomist sisters later in the seek at a no-host luncheon at the Wagon Wheel on Wednesday, Oct. 5. Jane was the house guest of Mrs. George during their Heppner visit, while Joan stayed with the Herman Winters family. On Thursday, Oct. 6, the English women left Morrow County, enroute to Portland, San Franscisco, Los Angeles and back to England. Alto gether their American tour will have spanned seven weeks. Traveling mainly by Grey hound, the pair has visited Las Vegas, the Grand Canyon, Salt Lake City, Denver, Sioux Falls, Calgary and British Columbia. They explained that their Soroptimist Club in Folke stone is one of 29 clubs in a division, similiar to the area arrangement here. Their club has sister clubs in Norway, Belgium and in Heppner. "We've had a fantastic time in the States. We have nothing but praise for the cleanliness of your rest rooms," Mayling exclaimed about her second trip to America. ' On her first visit, Clark commented, "We've met with such overwhelming kindness and made friends every where." The group toured historic Canyon City and had a special "Last of the season" look through the new Chinese Museum. At the October 5 Heppner meeting in the home of Kathy Hazen, Betty Forrar reviewed the John Day trip for the benefit of those who had missed it. Guest speaker Lynn Gochnauer gave an interest ing and humorous talk about her adventures in Australia. Chloe Pearson reported on the coming appearance of the Portland Junior Symphony Orchestra and members con sidered attending as a group. President Anne Doherty presided during the business meeting which was centered around a discussion of preli minary planning for this year's Artifactory.
