The Gazette-Times, Heppner, Ore., Thursday, August 11, 1977 THREE McLeod, Hyatt set date Driscoll, Clinker united with Justine Weatherford We were pleased to take a trip up to Penland Lake last Sunday afternoon. We saw quite a few deer near the road as we traveled. It seemed like a big part of the county's population was gathered at Cutsforth Park. The first Annual Good Times arranged by Chuck and Kay of Bucknum's Tavern looked like a big success. Last week Jessie Furlong turned 82 years old. Her daughter Naomi Matthews arranged a suprise birthday party with cake and jello at the Neighborhood Center during the Craft and Social time Thursday afternoon. Friends brought gifts and "cards for Jessie. Everyone enjoyed learning to make macrame flower-pot holders from teacher Irene Anhorn. Rita Sumner of Judy's furnished the iute for tms project. Later that day Jessie was suprised with a second party at the & W. Drive-In where Mary Benge brought a birthday cake and friends gathered to celebrate. There has been bad health news concerning several Lexington area men Seems Don Pointer and Norman Nelson are suffering. One quite newcomer, Heppner's City Utility foreman, Don Penney, has been hospitalized in Portland for about a week with serious back trouble. Many Cutsforth relatives traveled to Portland over the wekend to attend the marriage of Dorothy Zita's middle daughter Judy. Kathy Cutsforth from Pendleton who attended school here through the ninth grade is helping with harvest out at the Pointer Ranch. Friends who remember Kathy's mother during her years here note how much Kathy resembles Sharon. Last Thursday evening the Main Street City Park was really being used by young folks. At least 30 were gathered there. That same evening some of the youth from the Tupper Y.C.C. Camp went to the hospital to sing for he patients. Loren Hayes, the younger Jim Hayes son, has returned from a month's visiting wigh his maternal grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Wes Baker at Jacksonville. The sudden, short-lived shower last Saturday night caused lots of puddles about town. We hope the lightning that preceded it didn't ignite fires in our county's forests lands. We hear that some fire fighters from Oregon have been sent to California to help quell the fires there. Those who work in the Library-Museum Building and those who visit there are so pleased that its air-conditioning has been restored. The system failed in May and the building was very hot during June and especially uncomfortable last month. Judge Nelson and Ray Ayers came to the rescue and once again the temperature is comfortable and work and viewing and book borrowing can go on at a good pace. We hear that the Heppner Soroptimists are attempting to arrange a picnic for the patients at the nursing home. Also the Soroptimists will be announcing plans for their big fund raising event, the fall rummage sale soon. Keep this in mind and start setting aside rummage for these do-much-good ladies. Matters relating to the big five-class reunion are still reaching the paper. It seems that our friend Ruby Thornberg Becket had her name left off the list of 1926 graduates in 'attendance. Dr. James A. Keller, of Kirksville, Mo. sent a good letter and biographical sketch. Was sorry to miss the big gathering and recalls his school days in Heppner and Lexington High School. He is now retired after being an instructor at the Kirksville College of Osteopathy and Surgery for 30 years. Mr. and Mrs. Thomas G.
