Edith Nichoson, honored for 27 years Nicho son-Tucker cited for lone civic work Bike rodeo winners named in Boardman and Irrigon Women's meeting Monday "Cake decorating can be easy," will be presented by Maryan McElligott, instructor at Blue Mountain Community College, at the Christian Business and Professional Women's dessert meeting, Monday, May 2, at the Elks' Club at 7:30 p.m. A cake will be decorated and given away at the dessert meeting. Guest musician will be Dorene Grace, contralto solo ist. Georgia Schweikhardt of Richland will be the guest speaker. This is the second dessert meeting of the Heppner Chris tian Business and Profession al Women. All women are cordially invited to attend and Asthma camp applications are due Camp Christmas Seal, which is a project of the Oregon Lung Association, wants to help children who suffer from asthma. Applica tion forms need to be sent in right away for this year's one-week camp session, which comes from Aug. 21 through 27. The camp is held in Clack amas County near Molalla and uses the summer camping facilities of Camp Colton. Girls and boys 9 to 13 years of age may attend. A maximum of 70 campers will be accepted for the 1977 session. Application forms, one to be completed by a parent or guardian and one by the child's physician may be ob tained from the Eastern Re gion office of the Oregon Lung Association, La Grande, P.O. Box 847, or from the Oregon Lung Association office, Med ical Arts Building, Portland, Ore. 97205. Oregon State Federation of Garden Clubs' Awards Chair man Donna Donohue, Port land, had the privilege of presenting two special awards to two Ionians at the District 10 Spring Meeting on April 21. Edith Petteys Nichoson, the only surviving charter mem ber of the lone Garden Club, was honored for her 27 years of outstanding contributions to her community and her club. Mrs. Nichoson helped plant Woolery Park in lone, was treasurer of her club for 12 consecutive years, has served on ma v .ummittees, has at tended most District 10 as well as several state Garden Club meetings. Edith, who is now 85 years old, still tends her garden surrounding her home, which sits back from Ione's Main St. She is a daughter of the Amanuel Petteys, who settled at the confluence of Willow and Rhea Creeks in 1872. Her mother loved flower garden ing and the Petteys' yard surrounding their home and early stage stop was known for its flowers. Some of the trees planted by Edith's par ents still survive. Edith Nichoson received her award citation personally and was given a standing ovation by the District 10 members. An Award of Appreciation for a non-Garden Club mem ber was presented in absentia to Eldon Tucker, "who enjoys people and working with his hands to help people and to beautify his community." Mr. Tucker is the utility foreman for the City of lone. Awards chairman, Mrs. Donohue, explained that the versatile Mr. Tucker wears many hats. He has been very ! helpful for many years to the citizens of lone. He has maintained the city park since J956, has always collected! Christmas greens and super-1 vised their annual burning. has generously helped the j elderly, just seems to be his i town's "indispensable man.' Bicycle Rodeos held re cently in Boardman and Irrigon saw 28 prizes awarded to participants plus certifi cates of participation for all children in grades one through seven in each event. Sponsors of the rodeos were the Morrow County Peace Officers' Association and the Morrow County Juvenile Ad visory Committee. Bicycles were checked by police of ficers and volunteers and competition was held in four different skill tests. Volunteers included mem bers of the Boardman Lions' Club, interested community people and police officers from various departments including State Police. Various gifts ranging from $5.00 in cash to potatoes, hamburgers, pop and gift certificates went to the follow ing children.
