The vote in Umatilla County was 4,187 in favor and 3,365 against. In Morrow County, the vote was 459 in favor and 537 against. Car at right collided with the overturned truck. Impact at the truck gas tank spread gasoline across the road. Firemen cleaned up and a 930 log loader from Kinzua Corporation set the truck upright, cutting more than one hour from a traffic jam which completely bottled traffic for 45 minutes. (G-T Photo) Car truck smash injures two, stalls traffic rush A car-truck accident on Highway 74 near Heppner Thursday, April 14, sent two men to Pioneer Memorial Hospital and blocked traffic west out of Heppner the better part of an hour. The accident, involving a light station wagon, driven by Earl Dawson Bonner, 61, of Heppner, and a Pendleton Bottling Company truck, driv en by Donald Eugene Erick son, 35, 115 N.W. 6th, Pen dleton, took place about 5:15 p.m. one-half mile west of Heppner, during rush hour. According to State Police, John DuPont cuts Workmen Workmen started this week to dismantel the old Morrow County Jail in Heppner. The steel lock box which, along with door lock units, will be placed in the museum by the Morrow County Historical Society. The jail lock was patented in Sept. 15, 1874, and the cells were patented in 1878, both by yes, 32 no; Irrigon 77 yes, 55 no; lone 110 no, 65 yes; Lexington 87 no, 25 yes; Heppner 253 no, 162 yes. The race for director in Position 6 on the BMCC board went to Harman D. Springer of Hermiston. A complete tally of votes in both counties on the race for director was not available at press time. Springer took Morrow County. Barbara A. Wright of the Pendleton area was the sec ond highest vote gainer among four candidates in Morrow County. the Bonner station wagon was eastbound when it crossed into the westbound lane in front of the westbound truck. The truck crossed into the east bound lane and was struck on the right side as the station wagon returned to the east bound lane. The truck over turned in the eastbound lane and the station wagon came to rest in the westbound lane. Bonner was cited for driving while under the influence of intoxicants. The jail may be renovated to meet modern plumbing and electrical standards. The school district budget com mittee is expected to meet before the end of this week to consider alternatives. In Heppner, lone and Lex ington, vote was heavy against the proposed budget. The unofficial totals in Hep pner were 268 against and 152 in favor. In lone, 105 were against the measure and 72 in favor. Lexington voters cast 93 votes against the budget and 23 votes in favor. The tally for the county was 546 against and 466 in favor. GAZETTE VOL. 94, NO. 16 New utility foreman finds plertty to do April 1, the City of Heppner got a new foreman, Don Pen ney, and along with Don, Morrow County gained four other new Penneys, his wife Ruth, their sons Donald and Bart and their small daughter Patricia. Although the Penney family came to Heppner, they are living at suburban Ruggs in the double-wide home beside the Wright Store. The boys attend Heppner Elementary School and Don spends long hours catching up with work for the City of Heppner. Ruth and Patricia have been some what more homebound, fol lowing the recent move. They came from New York State via Kennewick, Wash. Mosirdma.m LID pl&muv&d It will take a $273,500 payment to meet the cost of the proposed Boardman water line local improvement dis trict. That figure was reveal ed to the city council Tuesday night by city engineer Steve Anderson. Anderson gave a full report to the council concerning the project including property Blood drawing set Monday A blood drawing will be held at the Heppner Elks' Club from 2:30 until 6p.m. Monday, April 25. The goal of the drawing is to fill 115 pints needed to meet the Morrow County quota, according to sponsors of the drawing. Sponsors of the blood draw ing are the Soroptimist Club of Heppner and the Heppner Ministerial Association. Donor requirements include all healthy persons between the ages of 18 and 66. A person over 66 years of age may donate at the discretion of the medical director in charge and with written consent of the personal physician dated with in two weeks of the date of donation. Minor consent slips are no longer required and donors must weigh at least 110 pounds. Te ws Billings in In elections Tuesday, mem bers were elected to three Morrow County school district advisory committees. Con gests in the lone-Lexington district and the Irrigon-Board-man district were won by Paul Tews and Zoe Billings. Paul Tews defeated Jerry McElligott for the lone posi tion. Tews gathered 193 votes to 86 for McElligott. In the Irrigon-Boardman committee race, Zoe Billings received 171 votes to 111 votes for Karen Peck. Bob Byrd, running unopposed, received 266 votes. In the Heppner-Lexington Advisory Committee race, Jim Wishart took the Heppner position with 460 votes. Sharon Harrison won the Lexington position with 394 votes.
