The twelve Garden Clubs of Blue Mountain District 10 of the Oregon State Federation of Garden Clubs, Inc., held their annual spring meeting on Thursday, April 21, in the Willows Grange Hall in lone. The meeting theme was "Be A Wise Gardener," and many owls were used along with spring blooms in the decora tions. Information about these wise birds was scattered throughout the session, espec ially at times when door prize numbers were announced. The lone Garden Club members as hostesses wore distinctive hats of yesteryears which made them easily identifiable. Pat Pettyjohn and Helen Martin were co chairmen of the committee which included Jean Nelson, Delta Huber, Nancy Miller, Judy Osmin, Dianna Hams, Wilma Ladd Martin, Thelma Ling, Loree Hubbard, Leila Palmer, Delpha Jones, Norma Rea and Jan Oswalt. After a get-acquainted cof feetime and registration, the morning session was presided over by outgoing district di rector Alaine Dallas, Pendle ton. Jean Nelson, lone club president, welcomed every one; Dorothy Heard, assistant director, responded; Mrs. Dallas introduced state and district officers. District busi ness was conducted and new officers were elected. Contri butions were collected for the Smokey Bear Teachers' Con servation Workshop Scholar ships. New district officers were elected. Seventy-two gardeners had lunch together in the hall dining room. The ladies of the Willows Grange prepared and served the luncheon. Small macrame owl keyring favors were at each place. During the lunch hour, the collection of more than 30 Peperomia plants was judged and the best one grown by Martha Queen of Pendleton's Dirt Dabblers Club was chos en to represent the district at the state convention June 13 through 15 at Lincoln City. "Milton-Fieeuater Tress photographs now on display Photographs by Arthur Tress are being shown at the Heppner High School Library in Heppner, now through May 12, Marion Abrams, librarian, said. Tress uses the medium of photography to capture the various life styles and habitats of New York City. The exhi bition focuses on major as pects of inner city life. This exhibition of photo graphs is made possible through the New York State Council on the Arts. The National Endowment for the Arts, Oregon Arts Commis sion, Statewide Services of the University of Oregon Museum of Art in Eugene, and other contributing aeencies. Pat Pettyjohn and Delta Huber, it was a prize winner at last year's state convention. An American Land Trust film was introduced by Delia Huber and projected by Helen Martin. It was explained that this trust, which is backed by the National Council of State Garden Clubs, aims to save and preserve choice areas of land throughout many states. The program hopes to stimu late public awareness of certain destructive practices, such as clear cutting in forests. Two special award certifi cates were presented to Ione's Edith Nichoson and Eldon Tucker. The officers for the district who will serve for the coming two years were duly installed by Alice Elmstrom. Portland, a past state president. Doro thy Heard, formerly of Hep pner, now a resident of Milt on -Freewa ler, became district director; Rachel Jack son. Echo, was installed assistant director and Connie Tellefson, M-F, as secretary-treasurer. Mrs. Heard briefly presented some of her hopes for the coming two years and asked the new district officers to meet with her after the meeting ad journed. The Heppner Garden Club was represented by five Peperomia plants and by its secretary, Justine Weather ford, and a new member, Ruth Penney. Mrs. Heard and the club members voted to give $10 to the American Land Trust in the name of Alaine Dallas as an appreciation gift from the district. The Garden Clubs of the Blue Mountain District are the Bloomer Girls, the Hermiston Garden Club, the Dirt Dab blers, the Pendleton Garden Club, the Echo Garden Club, the Freewater Club, the Green Thumbs, the Heppner Club, the lone Club, the Stanfield Club and the Umatilla Club.
