The Gazette-Times. Heppner, Ore., Thursday, Feb. 24, 1977 NIXE s : Riverside Junior High School' took a slow bus road home Saturday, but it wasn't a sad one. All the hardware they stole from Ione's junior high jamboree weighted the bus down. Riverside spanked Ione's Cardinal Junior High in both championship matches in "A" and "B" competition Saturday. Riverside took the trophies with a 26-25 win in the "A" division and a 28-25 victory in the "B" class. More than 75 boys competed in the four team, eight game tourney in front of what lone mentor Jerry Martin called a "good crowd." Riverside was the victor in the championship "A" contest, but they didn't exactly blister the Cards. lone led for three quarters and held a one point edge with less than a minute to play. A Riverside popper canned a fielder and put the Pirate juniors ahead 26-25 with :52 to play. lone couldn't find the range in the final seconds and settled for second best. At the end of a quarter, lone held a six point lead, 13-7, and at halftime, the lead had grown to seven points at 19-12. In the third quarter, the two squads traded buckets and the seven points was still apparent, 23-16. Riverside takes Jamboree V hardware, at lone Riverside outscored lone, 10-2, in the final stanza. Lerry Wilson and Scott Daniels paced Riverside with 11 and six points respectively. Mark Patton had nine and Scott Martin six for lone. Heppner dumped Umatilla, 23-15, for third place after both teams lost their openers to Riverside and Heppner, respectively. For third place, Jim Launer paced the Pony squad with nine points. Mark Richards paced the Vikings with eight. In the jamboree's starts, lone stopped Umatilla, 18-12. Scott Martin had 12 for lone and Richards had six for the Viks. In the other opener, Riverside bounced Heppner, 23-12. Heppner's Launer had six and Scott Daniels had 10 for Riverside. Like varsity, like junior varsity. With different scores, the same teams won the same games. Riverside's "B" team stopped lone, 28-25, for the championship. Derrick Trumbell had 17 for Riverside "and John Murray had 10 for lone. In third, Heppner slapped Umatilla, 18-16, using a nine point effort by Doug Holland. Hodges had nine for Riverside. In the openers, lone beat Umatilla, 20-12, behind John Murray's seven points. Heppner was thwarted by eventual champs, Riverside, in their opener, 15-12. Trumbell had seven for the Pirates and Holland had six for the Ponies. The jamboree awarded trophies for first place in both the "A" and "B" divisions. The trophies were donated by Jim McGraw at Desert Athletic in Hermiston. ... y-f ilf ; s yr- sv- . A . 'I TOP KNOTCH basketball action at the junior high level invaded lone Saturday. Four schools, represented by eight teams, com peted for two trophies in an "A" and "B" class tourney. Jackie Mollahan led an 11 girl scoring attack with 10 points. Heppner jumped out to an 8-2 first period lead and by halftime, sported a 26-4 lead. V'icki Edmundson had six second period points to spark the rally. From the field, Heppner outdid Oregon Trail, 38-14, and bumped them at the line, too. The Fillies scored 16 free throws in 27 attempts while OT managed to make two out of four. Deb Holland yanked down 11 rebounds to lead Heppner to a board win, 51-25. Janice Healy had eight and Wendy Meyers, seven caroms.
