Riverside Junior High School' took a slow bus road home
Saturday, but it wasn't a sad one. All the hardware they stole
from Ione's junior high jamboree weighted the bus down.
Riverside spanked Ione's Cardinal Junior High in both
championship matches in "A" and "B" competition
Saturday. Riverside took the trophies with a 26-25 win in the
"A" division and a 28-25 victory in the "B" class.
More than 75 boys competed in the four team, eight game
tourney in front of what lone mentor Jerry Martin called a
"good crowd."
Riverside was the victor in the championship "A" contest,
but they didn't exactly blister the Cards. lone led for three
quarters and held a one point edge with less than a minute to
play.
A Riverside popper canned a fielder and put the Pirate
juniors ahead 26-25 with :52 to play. lone couldn't find the
range in the final seconds and settled for second best.
At the end of a quarter, lone held a six point lead, 13-7, and
at halftime, the lead had grown to seven points at 19-12. In the
third quarter, the two squads traded buckets and the seven
points was still apparent, 23-16.

John Murray had 10 for lone.

The fact that their hopes of
district contention were al
ready squelched didn't seem
to bother Heppner's Fillies
last Thursday night when they
annihilated a hapless Oregon
Trail team, 54-16.
Jackie Mollahan led an 11
girl scoring attack with 10
points.
Heppner jumped out to an
8-2 first period lead and by
halftime, sported a 26-4 lead.
V'icki Edmundson had six
second period points to spark
the rally.
From the field, Heppner
outdid Oregon Trail, 38-14, and
bumped them at the line, too.
The Fillies scored 16 free
throws in 27 attempts while
OT managed to make two out
of four.
Deb Holland yanked down 11
rebounds to lead Heppner to a
board win, 51-25. Janice Healy
had eight and Wendy Meyers,
seven caroms.
