I7 Hear Si Their Mrs. Vida Heliker, Valley Vista Care Center, Auburn, Wash., was able to spend Christmas Day and Sunday at the home of her daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Busby, Seattle. Vida is getting better, and is County senior citizens in book "Golden Yesterdays," a collection of stories by senior citizens of Morrow and Uma tilla Counties, has just been Shanny Farley Engagement Mr. and Mrs. Jim Farley, of Heppner, an nounce the engagement of their daughter, Shan ny, to Mark Miller, son of Mr. and Mrs. Tad Miller, also of Heppner. Shanny will graduate this spring from Oregon State University, where she is affiliated with Pi Beta Phi Sorority. Mark graduated from the University of Idaho and is currently farm ing with his father. The couple has set Aug. 20 as their wedding date. ! These stories are not the usual biographical sketches, but are "really true" anec dotes of things that actually happened to the authors in the early days the kind people tell when their grandchildren say, "Tell us a story, grand- The stories have been gath ered in the past few months from the senior citizens. Some have been written by well known authors such as W W. "Bill" Weatherford of Hep pner and W.C. Caverhill, Milton-Freewater. Some Morrow County people who have stories in the book are Theta Lowe, Catie Padberg, Cleo Van Winkle, Alena Anderson, Frances Mitchell and many others. Edna Bauman Lyons read about the book-to-be in the Heppner Gazette-Times and sent her story, "The Mystery of the Grand Piano," from Portland; Jessie Furlong wrote about "Cooking for the Harvest Crew"; and Jerry Swaggert tells of his uncle's creamoline horses. "Golden Yesterdays" may be secured at the Heppner Neighborhood Center for $3. It is a fund raising project for the Retired Senior Volunteer Program of . V- VtJ PILLOWS went knee surgery on Dec. 13, at Emanuel Hospital, Port land. She is now at the Portland Rehabilitation Cen ter and is recuperating nicely. She spent Christmas Eve, along with the rest of the Norman Nelson family, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Howard Sloannecker, and Christmas Day at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Bert Mason, all of Oak Grove. The lone School program was held Tuesday evening, Dec. 22nd. in the school cafeteria. Grades from kin dergarten through the sixth grade participated in a play, "The Magic Window." Some times the magic of the Christ mas Spirit causes strange and wonderful things to happen it is said even the toys come to life at night in the store window; and each part was a peek into each window, Nar rators were Marie Oswalt and Sylvia Ladd. Fifth and sixth graders were the carolers singing "Oh Come All Ye Faithful," "Joy to the World," and "Away in the Manger." Fifth grade Chorus sang "Neath the Christmas Tree." Methodist women meet The United Methodist Wo men will hold their first meeting of 1977 in the church basement at 7:30 next Wed nesday evening, Jan. 5. New officers have been installed and will assume their respon sibilities at this meeting. Pastor Steve Tollefson will discuss planning with the ladies. They will review the group's programming for the coming year and will consider how their group may become stronger and more effective. The 1977 officers are: Presi dent, Justine Weatherford; Vice-President, Sylvia Mc Daniel; Secretary, Vicki Tol- lefson;-Treasurer, Ella Smith. I on t lr. A? 11 The windows were baby dolls, first grade girls; toy soldiers, first grade boys; marvelous toys, kindergarten; stuffed animals, second and third grades; mechanical toys, fourth grade; music box, fourth grade; Christmas cards, second and third grades; poem, "The Boy Who Laughed at Santa Claus" by the sixth grade. Following was singing "Deck the Halls" and "Silent Night" by the cast and Irrigon News by Francis Rose Wilson Ada Montague and her granddaughters, Beverly and Donna Driver, visited rela tives in Ellensburg and Ta coma. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Schmoll and family visited Mrs. Schmoll's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Steve Montgomery, in Portland for the holidays. Other members of the family joined for a family reunion. Mr. and Mrs. Harvey War ner visited their daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Ponteleis Vrontakis and sons in Salem for Christmas Day. Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Hobbs were hosts to 22 members of their family for Christmas Day. Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Mc Klligott are the proud parents of a baby girl born Dec. 13th at the Pioneer Memorial Hos pital in Heppner. The young miss weighed 6 lbs. and has been named Bridget Mary. Grandparent is Mr. Thomus Foley of Portland. Mr. Bill Ling returned a week ago from Portland where he was a patient in the Veteran's Hospital, having had surgery. On Thursday, Dec. 15th, Lewis Halverson, Leo Crab tree, and Archie Munkers moved the old Edison Morgan house on 2nd Street, down to the Crabtree lot, where it will be converted into a garage. Mr. and Mrs. Leo Crabtree drove to Pendleton Sunday to meet Jim McCabe from Mos cow, Ida., who will be visiting the Crabtrees and his father, Alvin McCabe, during the holidays. Mrs. Henrietta Arends, mother of Tim Arends, of The Dalles, spent Christmas week end at the Arena's llamli'tt home. Also home last week was Richard llamlett from Time to ring in' with our best wishes for the coming year!
