dents. These stories are not the
usual biographical sketches,
but are "really true" anec
dotes of things that actually
happened to the authors in the
early days the kind people
tell when their grandchildren
say, "Tell us a story, grand-
The stories have been gath
ered in the past few months
from the senior citizens. Some
have been written by well
known authors such as W W.
"Bill" Weatherford of Hep
pner and W.C. Caverhill,
Milton-Freewater.
Some Morrow County
people who have stories in the
book are Theta Lowe, Catie
Padberg, Cleo Van Winkle,
Alena Anderson, Frances
Mitchell and many others.
Edna Bauman Lyons read
about the book-to-be in the
Heppner Gazette-Times and
sent her story, "The Mystery
of the Grand Piano," from
Portland; Jessie Furlong
wrote about "Cooking for the
Harvest Crew"; and Jerry
Swaggert tells of his uncle's
creamoline horses.
"Golden Yesterdays" may
be secured at the Heppner
Neighborhood Center for $3. It
is a fund raising project for
the Retired Senior Volunteer
Program of . Umatilla and
Morrow Counties.

land. She is now at the
Portland Rehabilitation Cen
ter and is recuperating nicely.
She spent Christmas Eve,
along with the rest of the
Norman Nelson family, at the
home of Mr. and Mrs. Howard
Sloannecker, and Christmas
Day at the home of Mr. and
Mrs. Bert Mason, all of Oak
Grove.
The lone School program
was held Tuesday evening,
Dec. 22nd. in the school
cafeteria. Grades from kin
dergarten through the sixth
grade participated in a play,
"The Magic Window." Some
times the magic of the Christ
mas Spirit causes strange and
wonderful things to happen
it is said even the toys come to
life at night in the store
window; and each part was a
peek into each window, Nar
rators were Marie Oswalt and
Sylvia Ladd. Fifth and sixth
graders were the carolers
singing "Oh Come All Ye
Faithful," "Joy to the World,"
and "Away in the Manger."
Fifth grade Chorus sang
"Neath the Christmas Tree."

The United Methodist Wo
men will hold their first
meeting of 1977 in the church
basement at 7:30 next Wed
nesday evening, Jan. 5. New
officers have been installed
and will assume their respon
sibilities at this meeting.
Pastor Steve Tollefson will
discuss planning with the
ladies. They will review the
group's programming for the
coming year and will consider
how their group may become
stronger and more effective.
The 1977 officers are: Presi
