Houghton Elementary School Irrigon, is acting spokesman Teacher negotiations , Teachers and classified em ployees, meeting with sub committees of the Morrow County School District Board, completed their second nego tiating session without reach ing any major agreements. Key to the teachers' request has been the 53 page contract proposal which deals largely with working conditions. The Board and teachers have agreed to negotiate this por tion of the teachers' request before turning attention to salary and fringe benefits requests. Major differences of opinion have occurred between the board and teachers' group over whether or not some Ever wonder where we'd be without electricity? Since the passing of the Collective Bargaining Act in items in the request are re quired bargaining items or are permissive. Both sides have agreed to seek further clarification on these items. Classified employees have requested 25 percent base pay hikes for secretaries and aides, 20 per cent base pay increase for cooks and 15 per cent increase for custodial personnel. Increases of $20 per month are also being sought in bus drivers' pay and an increase to $3.50 per hour for hours spent in laundry and cleaning and in driving activity buses. The next meeting of the negotiating groups will be Jan. 3, at 7:30 p.m. at Riverside High School. Basin Co - op . 1978 1973. negotiations permit teachers to have a say in the provisions of their contracts and working conditions. Though negotiation sessions have been held in the past, packet of this size and dimen sion is new to Morrow Coun ty. While the board has stated it would like to see the new Contract last for three years, the teachers position is for A Growing one year. Written by the teachers' negotiation team beginning last winter, the packet was presented to the board in late November of this year. "This is the first time our board has ever been present ed anything like this," said Hesla. "But most urban schools have already passed similar packets." The packet contains 27 Part of Heppner articles for negotiation. They range from provisions for thei negotiation procedure itself to grievances, layoff and recall, personal and academic free dom, substitute teachers and salary and benefit provisions. "We think we're making some progress," said Wolff, "We've always had friendly relations with the teachers and intend to continue them. We will continue the negotia and Morrow County with a growing concern tion process until we reach an agreement that is satisfac tory." "The board's objective is to secure adequate educational facilities while representing the people of Morrow Coun ty." said Wolff. All citizens are allowed to attend the negotiating ses sions. Delegations are allowed to speak only at regular board meetings.
