The Mustangs bowed to the league leading and probable league champions, 21-0. Uma tilla has to lose its next two contests to Pilot Rock and Riverside for either Heppner or Sherman County to have a chance. If they (Umatilla) lose, he said, "I'll be absolutely amazed." Sporseen was Impressed with the Vik defense and admittedly said he "should be." The Viks held the Mustang backfield to 42 yards on the ground and 31 through the air. Steve McLaughlin paced the ground gainers, carrying 10 times for 25 yards. Stefanl hit on 11 of 16 passes for 186 yards and Kevin McCabe hurled one pass worth ten yards. The Cards churned for 228 yards on the ground, behind McCabe's 98 yard perform ance, and an outstanding effort from the offensive line. The Cards set the pace early in the game. On the first play from scrimmage, lone used a triple reverse pas play to fluster the Cascade Locks defenders. McCabe took the snap from between Stefani'g legs, handed off to Todd Sherer, end, who handed off to Stefanl, who threw a pass to Robin LaRue. LaRue raced with the pass, 69 yards to the nine yard line. McCabe took it In on the next play from the nine. Still In the firkt quarter, Stefanl ran four yards to paydirt following a 48 yard drive. I Heppner drew first blood, storing on the first play from rrimmsa when Bryce Tow- ell rambled 65 yards with the football. But In the remainder of the first period, Condon came up with a pair of score to take a lead they wouldn't relinquish. The first Blue Devil tally came when the Condon QB found a receiver and pumped the football for a 45 yard aerial touchdown. The second score came on the same play, from 11 yard out That 124 first period score was quickly changed when Condon drove 60 yards In the second period and punched the ball over from short yardage to cap the drive. Brown hit on four of 13 passes for 72 yards, including one fluke touchdown pass. Umatilla jumped on the board twice in the second period after a scoreless first period. The second TD came on a strange play that people will talk about and remember for a long time. Brown hurled a pass up for grabs toward the Vik goal line. Three Heppner defenders and Umatilla's Jim Bailey all were in contention for the grab. But in the end, the wrestling match for the ball was won by Bailey, who turned and jogged six yards into the end zone while the Mustang defenders watched. The first mark for the Viks came on a four yard plunge by Watson. A broken pass play forced Brown from the pocket but the fleet QB scrambled 33 yards into deep Mustang territory to set up the score. A scoreless third period followed the 14-0 halftime score before Umatilla scored its final TD in the fourth quarter. The third touchdown came after a 50 yard drive. Watson hit Brown with a counter pass after a pitch, and slipped past Mustangs ten yards to pay dirt. Heppner's offensive pene tration didn't break the 35 yard line barrier.
