Heppner's attempt to shove
Umatilla'i Vikings out of the
driver's seat last Friday fell
"way short.
The Mustangs bowed to the
league leading and probable
league champions, 21-0. Uma
tilla has to lose its next two
contests to Pilot Rock and
Riverside for either Heppner
or Sherman County to have a
chance.
While a tough Vik defense
held Heppner to less than 100
yards, the Umatilla offense

rolled up 263 total yards.
Heppner Head Mentor John
Sporseen said the "best team
won." Sporseen said Umatilla
was "25 per cent better than
Sherman County. If they
(Umatilla) lose, he said, "I'll
be absolutely amazed."
Sporseen was Impressed
with the Vik defense and
admittedly said he "should
be." The Viks held the
Mustang backfield to 42 yards
on the ground and 31 through
the air.
Steve McLaughlin paced the
ground gainers, carrying 10
times for 25 yards. Bruce
Young was four for 10 for all 31
yards. Jerry Cutsforth missed
on seven passes.
On the other side of the
fence, Umatilla was piling up
181 yards on the ground, paced
by senior quarterback, Mike
Brown. Heppner stopped Wat

Ione's Cardinals celebrated
their homecoming with the
first win of the season last
Friday, bouncing Cascade
Locks, 28-14.
"We played much better,"
Del LaRue. Card assistant
coach, said. "Siefanl had lots
of time to throw the ball and
the receivers had time to get
open," he said.
Dennis Stefanl steered an
offense that piled up a season
high, 424 yards. Stefanl hit on
11 of 16 passes for 186 yards
and Kevin McCabe hurled one
pass worth ten yards.
The Cards churned for 228
yards on the ground, behind
McCabe's 98 yard perform
ance, and an outstanding
effort from the offensive line.
The Cards set the pace early
in the game. On the first play
from scrimmage, lone used a
triple reverse pas play to
fluster the Cascade Locks
defenders. McCabe took the
snap from between Stefani'g
legs, handed off to Todd
Sherer, end, who handed off to
Stefanl, who threw a pass to
Robin LaRue. LaRue raced
with the pass, 69 yards to the
nine yard line.
McCabe took it In on the
next play from the nine.
Still In the firkt quarter,
Stefanl ran four yards to
paydirt following a 48 yard
drive.
Cascade Lock! bounced
back with a score of their own
to move to within a touchdown
before halftime. McClure
threw to Alan Rush for the 12
yard gainer.
But later in the second
period, Stefanl went to work
again. He hit Scott Sherer on a
26 yard pass for the TD and a
lead that the Cards would
never give up.
In the third quarter, Stefanl
used a quarterback sneak and
broke to the outside for a 35
yard jaunt to the end rone
after a 39 yard drive.
Cascade Locks' Anastasio, a
quick sophomore, raced 45
yards In the fourth period with
the final TD.

!jVs drop Condon, 28-14
I Heppner'a Junior varsity
Mustangs dropped their final
game of the season to Condon
Tuesday afternoon, but bounc
ed out of the year with a still
rr-ipective. 4 2 record.
. The Mustangs fell to Con
don'i Blue Devil machine,
28 14, giving up three touch
down passes.
I Heppner drew first blood,
storing on the first play from
rrimmsa when Bryce Tow-
ell rambled 65 yards with the
football.
But In the remainder of the
first period, Condon came up
with a pair of score to take a
lead they wouldn't relinquish.
The first Blue Devil tally
came when the Condon QB
found a receiver and pumped
the football for a 45 yard aerial
touchdown. The second score
came on the same play, from
11 yard out
That 124 first period score
was quickly changed when
Condon drove 60 yards In the
second period and punched the
ball over from short yardage
to cap the drive.
Trailing 206, the Mustangs
scored again in the third on a
defensive play. Sam Myers,
cited along with Jody Marlatt
for fine defensive effort,
blinked a Condon pun I. scoop
ed it up and pranced 30 yards
to paydirt.
Condon scored their fourth
and final touchdown In the
fourth period in the same pass
play that was effective for
them in the first period.
The game was the season
ender for the Mustangs, who
complete the seaon at 4 2

80 yards and Watson carried
29 times for 72 yards to lead
the Vik attack. Brown hit on
four of 13 passes for 72 yards,
including one fluke touchdown
pass.
Umatilla jumped on the
board twice in the second
period after a scoreless first
period. The second TD came
on a strange play that people
will talk about and remember
for a long time.
Brown hurled a pass up for
grabs toward the Vik goal line.
Three Heppner defenders and
Umatilla's Jim Bailey all
were in contention for the
grab. But in the end, the
wrestling match for the ball
was won by Bailey, who
turned and jogged six yards
into the end zone while the
Mustang defenders watched.
The first mark for the Viks
came on a four yard plunge by
Watson. A broken pass play
forced Brown from the pocket
but the fleet QB scrambled 33
yards into deep Mustang
territory to set up the score.
A scoreless third period
followed the 14-0 halftime
score before Umatilla scored
its final TD in the fourth
quarter.
The third touchdown came
after a 50 yard drive. Watson
hit Brown with a counter pass
after a pitch, and slipped past
Mustangs ten yards to pay
dirt. Heppner's offensive pene
tration didn't break the 35
yard line barrier.
Heppner faces Pendleton's
junior varsity at Pendleton
tonight (Thursday) in a non
conference tilt. They come
back next week at home with
Wasco County.
Mustang coaches cited Carl
Christman as Player of the
Week for his defensive efforts.
Christman had 20 defensive
points, getting six assists and)
seven unassisted tackles. He
also broke down Vik inter
ference. Tim Daly had 16 points with
six unassisted tackles, Jim
Kenny had 15 with seven un
