Pickels, relishes David AJcott, director of the Youth Conservation Corps, arranged for a tour of the Kinzua Corp., Heppner, Thur sday evening. Allen Nistad, Kinzua Corporation directed the tour for the YCC group. The YCC is a work-educational oriented program for youths who are interested in timber management. There are 26 students from all coun ties in Oregon, studying under this program at Tupper Work Center this summer. The students are offered tours, work programs and classes by a staff of six. The staff consists of college students from Oregon State University, University of Oregon and Kansas State under the direc tion of Dave Alcott who is with the staff of the Forest Service. Actually, you can make some treats from the vegetables of your labor too. The U.S. Department of Agriculture has two booklets to help you. "Making Pickles and Relishes at Home" gives directions for selecting ingre dients and preparing and processing pickles and reli shes. Included are basic re cipes for special favorites such as piccadilli and dilled green beans. And, for those of you who thrive on homemade strawberry Jam, there' an easy recipe in "How to Make Jellies, Jams and Preserves at Home." Here are a couple of easy reel pies from the booklets : Dilled Green Beans: wash and drain 4 pounds of whole beans; cut into lengths to fill pint jars. Pack beans in 7 clean, hot jars. To each pint jar add V tup. crushed hot red pepper, Vi Up. mustard seed, Mr tsp. dill seed and 1 clove garlic. Combine S cups vinegar, S cups water, and V cup salt; IChildrens movie to be shown The Heppner A.A.U.W. branch has obtained :: a popular children's movie, "A Boy Named Charley Brown" which will be shown this Friday, July 9, during the Sidewalk Bazaar. Pour boiling liquid over beans, filling to 4 inch of top of each jar. Adjust jar lids. Process in boiling water for S minutes (start counting processing time as soon as water in canner returns to boiling.) Remove jars and complete seals if necessary. Set jars upright, apart and cool on wire rack. Uncooked Strawberry Jam : sort and wash 2 cups of fully ripe strawberries. Drain. Re-' move caps and stems. Crush berries. Place prepared strawberries in a large mixing bowl. Add 4 cups of sugar, mix well, and let stand for 20 minutes, stirring occasional ly. Dissolve 1 package pow dered pectin in 1 cup water and boil for 1 minute. Add pectin solution to berry and sugar mixture. Stir for 2 minutes. Pour jam into freez er containers or canning jars, leaving 4 inch space at the top. Cover containers and let stand at room temperature for 24 hours or until jam has set. Makes 5 or 6 half pint jars. Store the uncooked jam in your refrigerator or freezer. It can be held up to 3 weeks in a refrigerator or up to a year in a freezer. Margaret Ashmead was the recipient of a special award as the club's first KOPS, keeping pounds off sensibly. Nuclear power discussed "Orrgonlans will not be voting In November on a mea sure which would ban nuclear power In this state, " said Chris Thomas, spokesman for Orrgonians for Nuclear Safe guards. Thomas was referring to the unsuccessful petition drive to place measurs on the November ballot which would have shutdown Trojan and banned all further nuclear power construction in Oregon. Supporters of the Initiative failed to collect sufficient signatures to place the mea sure on Oregon's November ballot.
