CB quarterfinals ustangs bow to Huskies, 49-51 By DAVE HANSON One basket separated the Heppner Mustangs from over time play and possible victory as they lost to the Sherman Huskies 49-51 Thursday in the Columbia Basin quarterfinals at the Pendleton Armory, Coach Dean Naffziger put it this way, "We're real dis appointed, but we played one heck of a ballgame." "It was a defensive game with both teams. We didn't give up points cheap and neither did they," he said. High scorers for the Mus tangs were Ken Eckman with 16 and John Kilkenny with 13. Naffziger thought both did an outstanding job, with Eckman sparking the offense and Kilkenny driving hard for the rebounds in the second half. Credit for making this game the closest of three contests with the Huskies this year should also go to the rebound ing and guarding ability of senior center Dave MeLach lan and the hustle of Clayton Wilson and Jerry Gentry, who scored II points. Eckman pumped in two jumpers early in the first quarter to put the Mustangs ahead of Sherman by a point. The Huskies then broke through with points from Scott Henry and Kelly Steward, w ho were making lay-ins on a fast break pattern. The score at the end of the quarter vas 16-13. Heppner trailed the Huskies through the rest of the half. Eckman made two more jumpers, and Gentry made 4 points in a row on a steal following a tip-in. The score at half time was 31-27. Cardinals lose conference bid io Wheeler, 49-42 "Fast, aggressive ball play iffg couldn't make up for a poor shooting percentage as the lone Cardinals lost their bid for the Big Sky champion ship to the Wheeler Falcons. 49-42. at the Pendleton Ar mory Thursday. Thursday. Card Coach Del La Rue said although the team consistent ly tnllowed the game plan, slaying on the boards and close to their men, their shooting percentage cost them the ballgame. "We had open shots in the bucket all day." he said. "If we'd had just one guy who was fairly hot we could have won the ballgame." The Cards Wrestling matches Monday The main event of the Lions Club sponsored wrestling matches Monday night will be a midget mixed 6-man tag match. The two-fall, 60-minute time limit event will put Billy the Kid. Snuka and Rocky Mon- tero against Lord Johnathan Boyd. Mati Suzuki and Cow boy Lang. The matches will begin at 8 p.m. at the Heppner High School gym. There will be two prelimi nary matches and a semi main event. Advance tickets are on sal. at Coast -to-Coast Store, Peterson's Jewelery and Gar dner's Men's Store. Proceeds from the wrestling event will help the Heppner Lions sponsor planned service projects for the community. Eastern BSC All-Stars are chosen The follpwing players were selected to the Eastern Big Sky Conference All-Star Basketball' Team by coaches of the eastern half of the league during a recent coaches' meeting: Mike Maurer, Umapine; Kelly Hawkins, Helix; Paul Peterson, lone; Steve Terje son. Helix; Mary Graham and Eddie Fisher, both of Echo. DEJOt The Mustangs came back strong in the third quarter with 4 more quick points, this time by Eckman, to tie the score at 31 all. Fast action and low-scoring marked the play in this quarter as both teams tried to establish a dominant lead. The fans, who nearly filled the armory, were especially re sponsive to the struggle, supporting their respective teams with a lot of vocal enthusiasm. A reverse lay-in by Gentry put the score at 41-40 going into the final quarter. Kilkenny got tough on the hoards and also made 6 points in the fourth quarter to keep the Mustangs within range of grabbing the lead. A foul on CB All-Star team named by coaches Three seniors and two juniors w ere named to the 1975 Columbia Basin All-Star basketball team as selected by the conference coaches. District champion Weston McEwen placed two on the first team, John Adams and Tim Meinhart. Also honored were senior Ken DeGrange, Sherman County and juniors .Jerry Zilenski. Riverside and Robert Kopp, Pilot Rock. Second team selections went to Ken Melzer and Kelly Steward, both seniors from Sherman Coui.'y: John Kil kenny and Ken Eckman, both seniors from Heppner, and junior Jim New-land from Stanfield. managed 24 per cent from the floor compared with the Falcons' impressive 43 per cent. 6'2" forward Andy Green field established an early lead for Wheeler with three baskets in the first quarter, helping put them ahead 11-6. Green field went on to become the game's high scorer with 20 points. Early in the second quarter, jump shots by Todd Peterson and Joe Rietmann tied the score for the Cards, but foul trouble put them behind 26-22 at the half. In addition to their height and weight advantage, the Falcons seemed to get all the breaks at the foul line as well. Wheeler made 19 of 26 attempts while lone shot only 2 for 13. The third quarter saw the Cards again rallying to within one point of the hot-shooting Falcons as they tightened up their man-to-man defense. A three-point conversion by Bill Pemberton put the Falcons ahead again and they continu ed to widen their lead through the fourth quarter. lone was plagued by fouls in the final minutes of the game as they intensified their de fense. Jerry Gentry then made what proved to be the final 3 points of the game for the Mustangs by making one foul shot and then stealing the ball as it came in bounds for a quick lay-in. Gentry stole the ball again in the final minute of play, and the Mustangs used this pos session to set up for the final shot that would win or lose the ballgame. With 12 seconds to go. Ken Eckman decided to go for broke. His 10-foot jumper was shot slightly off-balance due to the oncoming Sherman guards and bounced off the rim. A foul on Kelly Steward then gave the Huskies the last deciding point. Adams and Meinhart were repeators from the 1974 allstar squad first team and Zilenski was a second team selection a year ago. Falcon center Shawn Hum phrey then sank two foul shots to end the game. The Cards got off 81 field goal attempts during the game, out of which 19 con nected for 38 points. This was actually a higher total score from the floor than the Falcons acquired, making 15 for 46. and 30 points. Charlie McElligott and Todd Peterson lead the Cardinal scoring with 10 points apiece. Rebounding was close: 40 for Wheeler and 35 for lone. Senior center Mike' Warren pulled down the most for the Cards with 10. followed by Charlie McElligott with 8. Oregon Heppner cops 3rd After losing a close game to the Sherman County Huskies, the Heppner Mustangs came back Friday night to defeat the Pilot Rock Rockets 63-59 and win third place in the district tournament at Pen dleton. The Mustangs jumped off to a 11 point lead as the first period ended, leading the Rockets 22-11. They increased the lead 34 19 as the half came to a close. In the final period of play the Rockets came on strong with an all-out effort to pull the game out of the fire. The rally fell short, and as the final ' buzzer sounded the Mustangs had defeated the Rockets 63-59. Leading scorer for the Mustangs was Dave McLach lan with 24 points: Ken Kckman 17. John Kilkenny 12, Clayton Wilson 8 and Jerry Gentry 2.
