V Page 4 Mustangs fame Tigers, 55-49 The Heppner Mustangs tamed the Stanfield Tigers at the Heppner gymnasium Saturday night, 55-49. The tigers got the first score in the opening seconds of play, hut the Mustangs man aged to keep them from any further scoring for the next two minutes. The Mustangs went scoreless, but finally they found the range and were able to hit the basket and get on the board. When the first quarter ended the Tigers led the Mustangs 10-8. The second period was a see-saw game with neither team able to capitalize on the other team's mistakes and turnovers. With 1:06 left in the second period the Mustangs were able to take the lead from the Tigers for the first time. At the half the Mustangs led the Tigers 25-24 In the third quarter the Mustangs took advantage of the Tiger's turnovers and really started to hit the basket. During the period they had as much as a 9-point lead over their opponents. During the last period the Tigers came close to regain ing the lead. John Kilkenny was high point man for the .Mustangs with 20 points; Dave McLach lan with 17, Ken Eckman 7, Dave MoLeod 3 and Clayton Wilson, Jerry Gentry, Mike Mills and Clay West 2 each. Keith Garner of the Tigers scored 16 points; Jim Newland 15. Brent Kasari 8, Cory Pearson 5. Don Weetns and Tony Ramos had 2 each, and Marvin Mills scored 1. The Mustangs hit 22 x 55 from the field for a .400 average and hit on 11 x 23 from the free throw line for a .478 average. The Tigers hit on 20 x 63 from the field for a .317 average and scored on 9 of 18 from the foul line for a .500 average. This Friday night the Mus tangs host the Tiger-Scots of Wcston-.MiEwen. The Ileppner , Mustangs staved off a last -minute attack by the Redsidcs to defeat Wasco County 53-50, Friday night at Maupin. The Mustangs grabbed a fast lead in the first period of play and ended the first period with a 1:17 lead over the Redsidcs. Their lead w as short lived as the Redsidcs came back, found the range and took the lead from the Mustangs by scoring 20 points to the Mustangs' 10. and led at the half 27 2:1.
