Riverside Ave. Heppner nTrTr tit r f iiiiii ii Thursday, August J, Wi KERR HOME CANNING LIDS DRAW COMPLAINTS The outset of the canning season in Oregon has set off a flurry of complaints from home canners that the lids they have purchased this season are not sealing properly. Dr. Jane Wyatt, consumer officer for the Oregon Depart ment of Agriculture, said complaints too numerous to count have reached her office and those of home extension agents and newspaper editors and they all deal with canning jar lids manufactured by Kerr Glass Manufacturing Corpor ation of Sand Springs, Oklahoma. She said most of the women complaining are saying that sometimes less than half the lids are sealing. Dr. Wyatt contacted Kerr t headquarters in Oklahoma and a spoksman there said there had been a slight change iii the character of the lids, but that the company would stand behind the product if proper procedures are used. The change apparently was created when to conform to air pollution standards the com pany altered its drying pro cess on the rubber seals bonded to the inside of the lids. Dr. Wyatt said the spokes man, who did not wish to be identified, said the sealing material is harder than it has been, but that proper pre paration of the caps should produce a good seai.
