Heppner, Ore., Gazette Kinizuo Ngus Mrs. Deena Reid and daugh ters Dana and Lana, Mrs. Marty Wallis and Mrs. Roberta Reid were in The Dalles Tuesday to keep doctor and dental appointments. Donnie Hardwick went to John Day Wednesday to keep a, dnetal appointment. Mrs. Sue Mattison and Robin went to Heppner Wed nesday to keep a dental appointment for Robin. Mrs. Margaret Rogers and Mrs. Evie Luper went to Bend Thursday to pick up Pam Rogers, they traveled on to Ashland so Pam could register for college on Friday. They returned home on Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Dan Bell went to Portland Friday on busi ness. While there they visited Mr. and Mrs. Roy Curtis and Mr. and Mrs. Rick Robbins and family. Joe Robbins came home with Mr. and Mrs. Bell for a weeks visit. Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Reid and family went to John Day to keep eye appoint ments. From there they traveled on the Hermiston to visit Mr. and Mrs. Robert Reid and family until Sunday. Mr. and Mrs, Chuck Mitchell and family were weekend guests of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Reid and family also, with Maria Wilson re turning with them for a weeks visit. Mr. Earl Norris flew to Richland, Washington Thurs day on business. Mr. and Mrs. Guy Williams and family left Friday for a weeks vacation to Altuna, California. Mr. and Mrs. Jim Nyseth and family left Friday for a weeks vacation in Washington. Mrs. Lora Hire and Mrs. Bonnie Campbell were in John Day Friday to keep a dental appointment for Lora and do some shopping. Mr. and Mrs. Tom Griffin of Roseburg were here visiting Saturday and Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. Jack Sitton. They were on the way to the World's Fair in Spokane. Miss Cathy Nelson of Port land was here visiting her parents for the weekend Mr. and Mrs. Dempsey Simms. Mrs. Roberta Conlee went to Heppner Saturday on busi ness. . Mr. and Mrs. Neil Edwards of The Dalles were weekend guests of Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Cecil and to attend the Wherli Peterson wedding. Mr. and Mrs. Bob Hire and family went to The Dalles Saturday to do some shopping. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Burres and family were weekend guests of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Powers of Prineville. Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Ben son were in Pendleton for the weekend to take care of some business, and do some shop ping. They also visited their daughter Nancy. Mr. and Mrs. Troy Day and family were in Mitchell for the weekend to attend to the 50th wedding anniversary re ception of Mrs. Day's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Blann. Saturday Mr. Howard Rice returned Don Oyler to his home in Bend, and visited Mr. and Mrs. Paul Oyler. Mrs. Kathryn Mai and Mrs. William Mai Sr. returned Saturday from a weeks stay Wimic, where they had senior Bible Camp. Pastor Mai and Jim O'Neal left Sunday to spend this next week councel ing for junior Bible Camp. Mr. and Mrs. Dick Kendall and Patty went to Mt. Vernon Saturday to pick up their daughter Brenda who had spent the past three weeks in Baker visiting relatives. Pre-fair horse judging scheduled A 4-H horse judging contest has been scheduled for Sun day, August 4, at 6:00 p.m. at the Morrow County Fair grounds, reports Mike Howell, 4-H agent. All 4-H horse club members are elegible to take part in this event. Team and in dividual cash awards will be given. The top six individuals will have an opportunity to attend either the State Fair or Pacific International horse judging contest. The Morrow County Horse Show will be held August 11. Due date for fair pre registrations, both livestock and home economics is Aug. 5th! Members and leaders, please get those registration forms to the County Extension office, as soon as possible. County fair dates are August 20 23. Now is the time - for all Morrow County residents to look over their handicrafts, flowers, vegetables, hobbies, livestock and such with thoughts in mind of exhibiting at the Morrow County fair. Harold Kerr, Morrow County Extension agent re turned home Friday from a six week's session on Farm Management at Oregon State University. RETURN'S TO PORT Navy Machinist's Mate Third Class. Hal M. Rickert, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles H. Rickert, Kinzua, Ore., return ed to his homeport of San Diego, Ca., from a seven and one-half month deployment aboard the attack aircraft carrier USS Kittyhawk. He and his shipmates participat ed in excerises with units of the Seventh Fleet in the Western Pacific and Indian Ocean. The Hustons were working 18 miles away at the time and when they noticed the blaze they started for home, but by the time they arrived their friends and neighbors had the fire under control. The fire burned 15 acres of grass adjacent to many acres of prime wheat without any damage to the wheat. Without the fast action of the friends and neighbors the results could have been disas trous. Arrested for drugs The Oregon State Police arrested John L. Gallaway and Daniel Fisher on charges of posession of less than one ounce of marijuana Monday, July 29. After spending the night in Morrow County jail, the pair plead guilty before Justice of the Peace, Charles O'Connor and were fined $105 each. Both Gallaway and Fisher are residents of Mosses Lake, Wa. David B. Murray, Heppner, was arrested July 29 and charged with criminal activity in drugs by allegedly cultivat ing marijuana. Preliminary hearing of the case will be delayed until Murray retains a lawyer. He was released on $1,505 bail. DIES IN GEORGIA Lester Neel Ashbaugh, 58, died July 22. 1974 at his home in Hogansville, Georgia of a heart ailment. Mr. Ashbaugh was born May 20, 1916 at Lonerock, Ore. He was retired from Columbia Machine, belonged to the Elks Lodge and was a veteran of World War 2. He is survived by his wife Shirley; three sons, Larry Ashbaugh, Griffin, Georgia; Jack Ashbaugh, Atlanta Georgia; Tim Ashbaugh of , Hogansville, Georgia; daugh ter Lisa Ashbaugh, Hogans ville; sisters Mrs. Douglas Rick, Wenatchee, Wa.; Mrs. Daryle Evans, Vancouver, Wa.; also three grandchild ren. Jackie, Jerry and Georgia Ashbaugh. SAVINGS Natural gas companies, fuel oil dealers and electric com panies all agree that a clean heating system will CilIC Pioneer dies at hospital Andrew Thomas Harris, 90, a 65 year member of this community passed away Saturday July 27, at Pioneer Memorial Hospital. Harris was born Sept. 9, 1883, at Glencoe, Minn., and came to Morrow County at an early age. He met Mellie Pressley and they were married in Weiser, Idaho, Oct. 30, 1909. They returned to Oregon where they homesteaded at Kamella, before moving to a ranch on Upper Rhea Creek. They farmed this ranch for several years before moving to another ranch in the same area, where Harris farmed until his retirement in 1954, when they moved closer to Heppner. During his retirement he enjoyed hunting and some fishing. In addition to his wife of Heppner, survivors include a daughter, Julia Hill of Coos Bay, Ore.; son, Darrel Harris, Heppner; seven grandchild ren, nine great-grandchildren and one brother Robert Harris, Pendleton, and a niece Beatrice Healdsberg, Minn. Services were Tuesday, July 30, Sweeney Mortuary Chapel at 2 p.m. with the Rev. David Blackaller of the All Saints Episcopal Church officiating. Vault interment followed at Heppner Masonic Cemetery. Mr. and Mrs. Hubert Wilson sang, "Rock Of Ages" accompanied by Kathryn Hoskins. Casket bearers were Cornett Green, Elwyn Hughes, Howard Pettyjohn, Clarence Baker, Howard Bryant, and Hubert Wilson. Services at Pendleton Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Burns Mortuary, Pendleton, for Nettie N. Denton. Mrs. Denton, 88, died Sunday night at Salem. She was born at Scottsville, Ky: She was married Jan. 25, 1903, to Edgar Denton in Tennessee. They moved to Wallowa, where they lived for many years before moving to Condon, and later to Heppner. The last two years she had lived at Salem. Her husband died in 1956. She also was preceded in death by four children: Harlan, Raymond, Ruby and Inez. Mrs. Denton was a member of the Church of the Nazarene. Survivors are sons, Frank, Brookings, Ore., and Howard, Richland, Wash.; daughters, Mrs. Frank (Eula) Fisher of Eugene, Mrs. Vic (Thelma) Flynn and Mrs. Joe (Loreda) Rivera, both of Salem, Mrs. Raymond (Norma) French of Heppner and Mrs. David (Sharon) Peterson of Condon; 19 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. Interment was held in the Wallowa Cemetery at 2 p.m. Wednesday. Near Mass held for Camilla Monahan Camilla Dolores Monahan, 59, died at her home in Heppner, Friday, July 26. She was a long time resident of the county and a member of St. Patricks Catholic Church and alter society. She was born August 26, 1914, in Countylongford, Ire land. She was the daughter of Frances Kilkenny and Margaret Brady Kilkenny. She was united in marriage to James Monahan in Hermiston, Ore., Jan. 4, 1936. Resitation of the rosary was held Sunday, July 28, at 7:30 p.m., at St. Patricks Church, Heppner. Funeral mas was Monday, July 29, at 10 a.m. with the Rev. William Mangan officiating. Interment follow ed at the Heppner Cemetery under the direction of the Sweeney Mortuary, She is survived by her husband James of Heppner, three sons, Michael F.
