Several college students arrived last week to spend the holidays in parental homes. Marianne Pettyjohn. Jim Swanson. Christina Lind strom. David Warren. Clint Krebs, Ann McElligott. Joe McElligott, Chert Carlson. Carley Bergstrom and Shauna Bergstrom were among the arrivals. The Junior church school class of the United Church of Christ met at the home of Mrs. Robert Rietmann Dec. 16 for cookie bake. The young people prepared several plates of homemade cookies and dis tributed them to some of the older bachelors living in lone. John Edmundson, principal of lone Schools, reports the school district's allocation of gasoline has been cut by 10 per cent of last year's amount and that further reductions are a possibility. The action will result in curtailment of some activity runs by the school buses. He reports the heating oil situation at this time seems to be sufficient to operate through the cold part of the year and into the time when iittle or no .heating will be required. The schools are curtailing heating and lighting wherever possible. , John Ekstrom. son of Mr. and Mrs. Herb Ekstrom Jr., was the second victin of an accident in physical education class at lone High School. He sustained a fracture of both bones in his lower right arm while wrestling with Skye Krebs. Bill Tews fractured his left shoulder a week earlier in a similar accident. John's arm was put in a cast and he was able to return to school the following day. The lone Post Office lobby is closed from 5 p.m . to 7 : 30 a .m . on weekdays, and from 12 noon Saturday to 7:30 a.m. Monday on weekends. f 1 wS Soropt,mist c,ub'8 :! A holidai abundant in peace and love our season's wishes The Chapman ranch at Cecil has been sold to Bun Logan. The ranch was formerly owned by Dick Pat ton. The freshman class netted about $20 on the soft drink can and bottle drive held last Saturday. The traditional red star on the lone reservoir has been lighted, at least temporarily, for the Christmas season. It is the only outdoor lighted dec oration in lone. The lone junior high school basketball team played at Umatilla Dec. 13. The B team won 29 H. Kevin McCabe scored 8 points, Dennis Stefani 5. Danny McElligott 6, Ricky Doherty 4, Robin LaRue 2, John Lindstrom 2, and Scott Sherer 2. The A team lost 22 42. Scoring for lone was Clint Carlson 6, Leland White 6, Kevin McCabe 6, Ricky Gilbert 2 and Danny McElli gott 2. Snappy Snippers 4-H Club members Kristi Edmundson, Jan Peterson, Carol McElli-. gott, Michelle McElligott and Natalie Tews, visited the Heppner Nursing Home, Dec. 11. The girls sang carols in each room and presented a hand made tree ornament and Christmas card to each pa tient. The girls had made brightly colored carryall bags at their last meeting, and these were left with the nurses to be distributed later. The girls were accompanied by their leaders, Mrs. Herb Peterson and Mrs. Paul Tews, and guests, Rondie Tews, Grace McElligott, Treve Peterson, Mrs. Don McElli gott and Mrs. John Edmundson. Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Magill have moved their trailer house to Krebs Bros, ranch in Cecil. Stan began working at the ranch Dec. 10. They had been staying at the Dick Pat ton place. 0 A 0 "J & UJffo iori filled with joy The sophomore class of lone High School met at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Krebs Dec. 18 to make candy for a candy sale money-making project. The group prepared popcorn balls, taffy, penuche. divinity, fudge, caramels and butterscotch squares. It took five hours to complete the candy making. The candy sold very qutckly and the class president. Skye Krebs. thought the group would clear about S20 after all materials are paid for. The annual lone Schools Christmas program will be Dec. 20 at 7:30 p.m. in the cafetorium. School will be dismissed at 1:30p.m. Friday. . Dec. 21. Santa Gaus had some help sacking candy Dec. 12 when 11 Cardinal Club members met in the school cafetorium. Those lending a hand were: Mr. and Mrs. John Jepsen, Mr. and Mrs. Lee Palmer, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Krebs, Mr. and Mrs. Cleo Childers, Mrs. Dick Sherer, Mrs. Lewis Halvorsen and Howard Crowell. Four hundred sacks of treats were prepared for distribution at the school program. Dec. 20. The cost of the candy and peanuts of this project runs about $150. The money is being raised by a benefit drawing for four prizes donated by local merchants. Tickets are still available from Cardinal Club members. Mrs. Nelson Veltkamp and sons, Dana Darren and Jim McCabe, Pullman, visited at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Leo Crabtree, Cecil, last weekend. Mrs. Veltkamp watched her son, Kevin Mc Cabe, play in a Saturday afternoon basketball game; another son, Ashley McCabe, play in an evening ball game; and then stayed through Monday to see Ashley in the play, Hillbilly Christmas. Mrs. Veltkamp and family left Tuesday to return to Pullman. J M national! It. The young people discussed the word"Hope." The junior high class will use the word "love" as Its theme when it leads the worship service Dec. 23. They are ted by Mrs. Louise Sullivan and Mrs. Jan White. In the evening, Dec. 23, the church school program will be presented at 5 p.m. Mrs. Lindsay Kincaid will be the coordinator. Following the program a potluck supper will be held. The Deaconnesses are in charge. The group will go caroling in the community and return to the church for refreshments. A candlelight communion service will be held Dec. 24 at 10:30 p.m. These services are for anyone who would like to attend. Everyone is welcome. The lone United Church of Christ received four persons into membership Dec. 16: Mrs. Loree Hubbard, Mrs. Mary Bristow, Mrs. Jan Oswalt and Mrs. Vida Heliker. Mr. and Mrs. Leo Crabtree, Cecil, were dinner guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ken Palmer, Lexington, Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Mar shall also were present. The group played 6-handed pi nochle after dinner. The December meeting of the Beta Omega chapter of Epsilon Sigma Alpha was held at the home of Mrs. Roy A. Lindstrom on Dec. 11. A secret sister Christmas gift ex change followed the business meeting. Mr. and Mrs. Roy W. Lindstrom and Mr. and Mrs. Gar Swanson attended a dinner for Bank of Eastern Oregon bank directors and wives in Arlington, Dec. 12. Gar won the picture presented by John W. Krebs. - fit by Dennis Peck Mr. and Mr. Walter Jacob ton of Mosea Lake were weekend visitors at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Keith Rea. Jake is working for Farm Management Inc. Three lone boys were ine winners in three age groupc at the Elks Free Throw Contest held in the gym, Dec. IS. Craig Gutierrei was winner in tne ' 9 year-old group scoring 26 out of SO throws. Scott Martin was winner in the 10 11 year-old group with 32 for 50. Leland White was 1st In the 12 13 year-old bracket, also with 32 for SO. The contest was under the direction of Jerry Martin and Gint Agee. I I I The speech and drama classes of lone High School presented a short play, "Hill billy Christmas Carol," by LeRome Greth, Dec. 10 11, In the cafetorium. The comical sketch was based on Dicken'i "Christmas Carol." Widow Hinkly was looking for a husband. Joshua seemed to fit the part per fectly, but he had to be convinced he needed a family and that Christmas did exist. The children banded together to prove this. The cast was: Joshua, a modern Scrooge, Mark Riet mann; Widow Hinkly, Gayle McNary and Marlly Warren; Hiram, the wldow'i lazy son, Phil Carlson and Tom Gates; Cora Belle, her daughter, Ctndi Martin; Lizzie Ann, WW The merriest of holidays...from First National Bank of Oregon As one year comes to an end and another begins, the folks at the Heppner branch of First National would like to thank the many fine customers and friends who have made 1973 such a pleasurable year for us.
