HT3 Culver rotas lone Homecoming, 34-14 The Culver Bulldogs de feated the lone Cardinals Friday, at lone's Homecom ing Game. 34 H The Cardinals kicked off to the Bulldogs and managed to hold the Bulldogs in their own territory On their first series of downs, the Cardinals moved the ball lo within inches of the goal line, but a fumble with a recovery by the Bulldogs ended the threat of a Cardinal score The Bulldogs were able to move the ball effectively against the Cardinals until the Cardinals forced the Bulldogs into a punting situation The Cards were gaining ground when Kirk Holcomb. Culver, intercepted a pass and ran into the end lone for a Culver TD The PAT was good and Bulldogs led 84. A few plays later, with Culver in possession of the ball, a pass was intercepted by Cardinal Mike Warren, but as he was tackled he fumbled the ball and the Bulldogs recov ered A Holcomb to Galloway pass $4 rjt I. m Doris McCabe was crowned Homecoming Queen during halftime activities at lone last Friday. Kevin Gutierrez, Cardinal guard, was her escort. snra was good for 45 yards and Culver had another TD. The PAT failed Mike Warren, lone, re turned the ball on the next series or plays for a good gain, and a pass from Joe Rietmann to Mark Rietmann scored a Cardinal TD. The pass play covered 45 yards. The PAT failed and Culver led 14- A one-yard gain by Hol comb, Culver, added another 6 points as the half ended with Culver ahead 20-. During the half-time activi ties, Doris McCabe was chosen as the Homecoming Queen. There was no score in the third quarter, and midway through the fourth quarter Tom Gates. Culver, ran 70 yards for another TD. A pass play for the Cardi nals, Joe Rietmann to Mark Rietmann was good for 28 yards and another Cardinal score. The PAT was good and tne scoreboard now read Culver 26, lone 14. Jerry Larrance, Culver, then ran 13 yards for 6 points. The try for the extra point was good as the gun sounded, ending the game with the final score Culver 34. lone 14. The statistics for the game are as follows: net yards rushing, lone 125, Culver 277; net yards passing, lone 10 x 18 for 228 yards. Culver 4 x 8 for 93 yards. E-l Michael D. Graves is at home in Hillsboro on a 14-day leave after having completed 11 weeks of training at the San Diego naval base. He will be stationed at Coronado, Ca., for the next year. He attended Heppner High School in 1973. He is the son of Mrs. Kenneth Sawyer and the grandson of Mrs! John Graves of Hard-man. Mr. and Mrs. Chester Wil son spent Sunday and Monday in Portland, Oregon City and Salem, visiting relatives. Their son Leon returned home with them. Monday was clean up day. The freshman class worked at the school and the other classes picked up trash a round the community. Three Iruckloads or debris were hauled to the dump. Tuesday was tug -of -war day. In the preliminary con tests, sophomores subdued the seniors and the juniors outpulled the freshmen. In the championship bout, juniors met stifr opposition from sophomores but succeeded in pulling them across the divi ding line. Wednesday was crazy shirt and socks day. The noontime activity was a three-legged gunny sack race. Dona Pal mer and Dawn Peterson were the winners. Thursday was crazy hat and shoe day. The noise parade was staged at 12:30 p.m. Twenty-one cars, pickups, and trucks, decorated and filled with cheering students, toured the streets of lone. Six members of the faculty were the judges. They were Bar bara Talley, Mary Langston, Gordon Meyers. Del LaRue, Donna Waibel and Darrel Wilson. Each vehicle entered was awarded a prize. No overall award was given. lone's Elementary School football team. Junior Cardi nals, were defeated by the Echo Cougars, 44-. in a game played at lone Thursday afternoon. The Junior Cardinals, al though lacking in heighth and weight, nianaged to hold Echo to two touchdowns in the first half. The halftime score was Echo 14. Cardinals 0. During the second half, Echo took command of the game as they went to the air. The Echo "quarterback con nected with his tight-end for another TD. and Echo led 22-0. Midway through the third quarter. Junior Card John Lindstrom, scampered 60 vards on a pass from Dennis Stefani for the only score of the game. The PAT was short and the Cards were orANie scoreboard with 6 points. Echo continued to score during the remainder ot the third period and also in the fourth quarter on pass plays, interceptions, and their run ning attack, as the gun sounded ending the final play, Echo had run up 44 points. The Junior Cardinals are a newly formed team, and for many of the players this is their first year of play. How ever, they hope to come back next year with a stronger and more experienced team. The Junior Cardinals are coached by Jerry Martin. Team members are Jerry Rietmann, Glen Krebs, Allan Roberts, John Kincaid, Robin La Rue, Todd Sherer, Leslie Thompson, John -Piening, Dennis Stefani. Scott Sherer, Danny McEliigott, Wade West. John Lindstrom, Leon Nix, Bud Kincaid, Bruce Mill man Leland White, , Clint.. Each, class cheered its candidate. Bruce Nix emerged the winner. Nightime activities were a havride. bonfire, lighting of the "I" and "7," and re freshments in the cafelorium. The truck for the hayride was supplied by Slim Emert and driven by John Edmundson. Friday, the lone Cardinals lost to the Culver Bulldogs. 34-H. The crowning of the Queen took place at halftime. Doris McCabe was crowned queen and presented with a bouquet of red roses by Kevin Gutierrez. The Princesses were given single longstem med red roses. Mark Riet mann made the presentation to Sherri Wilson, Phil Carlson to Dawn Peterson. Tom Gates to Arlynda Aldrich and Paul Ashurst to Jan Ekstrom. Homecoming activities were concluded Friday night with the dance at the cafe torium. The Rolling West provided the music. The dance was well attended by students and alumni. 'poor' pheasant season opened Saturdav, and early reports indicate the hunting in this area is below par. The w eather was blamed for the poor hunting conditions, as a light rain fell over the area, forcing hunters lo remain In their cars and out of the fields, Some hunters agree the only way to hunt pheasants is to tro'mp through the fields and flush the birds. Although the birds seemed plentiful before the season, there appears to be a scarcity at the present. A game check was held by the Oregon State Game Com mission last Sunday evening, and citations were issued for the possession of hens and in some instances the disguising of the sex of the bird. Some hunters had skinned their pheasants, and could not produce the head of the male bird, which the law requires for transportation. Arrested in the game check were Lloyd Myron Ostrander, 56, and Charles Eugene Cham berlain. 23, West Lynn, Ore. Both men were arrested for transporting game birds with out fully feathered heads. They are scheduled to appear in Justice Court Oct. 30.
