The crow d kept coming and more tables had to be put up. Because some of the high school students had other meetings to attend. Band director Larry Hildebrandt pre sented these awards first. Top Awards The top high school band award, the John Phillip Sousa award went to Shannon Kelly. Activities, attitudes, citizenship and all around bandsnianship is considered for this award. Anita Davidson was named as the outstanding musician and James Marquardt the most improved. Shannon also receiv ed the outstanding service award. Student conductors were rec ognized Pins were presented to student conductors, Mary Abrams and Anita Davidson and assistant conductors. Shan non Kelly and David Campbell. Solo Awards Awards for the solo contest at Hermiston were presented. A gold medal to Anita Davidson for a 1 rating on her tenor saxaphone, Jim Marquardt sil ver medal for a 2 rating on the sousaphone, and silver medals for 2 ratings to Shannon Kelly on her baritone and Dena Struthers on the clarinet. Itmr F.ach of the four members of the lone Track squad received a J"""" medal at the Stale held last weekend Hill. F.ugcne. Kent made his best jump of the season. He took sixth place by jumping 20' 10", Don McCarty was 3rd with 21 '6''. David Warren jumped his best of the season with his high jump of 6' IV. He took 3rd. All three of the hoys are seniors. Phil Carlson the only junior is eagerly looking forward to his return to the state track meet next year. He was 6th in the high jump w ith 510'. Heppner Those who watched Susan Hoaly's performance at the State Track meet are confident that last week's bout with the flu left it's mark. EOC Prof Riverside's Commencement Speaker Dr. Douglas Spear of Eastern Oregon College will be the cond ,n,nu,'u',,,,enl speaker at the last year but is determined that "next year I'm going to win". She had 5th place in the high jump. Her jump of 411" is 2" under her record. Wade Padberg went into the finals but came in 7th in the 440 with a lime of 52.9. The Mile Relay team broke the Heppner High School Riverside High School May 25. Student speakers will be Debbie McCoy, Valedictorian: Susan Hall, salutatorian and Robert Adams, senior class president. Mrs. Albert Partlow will play the processional and reces sional. Rev. James Clarey of Our Lady of the Angels, Catholic Church, Hermiston will give the invocation and the liwm'r! Everyone is to provide their own sack lunch and drinks. Ice cream will be furnished by the kindergarten parents. All youngsters who will be entering Kindergarten next fall are invited to attend along with their family. Airman Music k ABILENE, Tex.-Airman First Class Carroll W. Musick, son of Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Musick. Rt. 1, Potlatch, Idaho, is a member of a Strategic Air Command wing which has earned the U.S. Air Force Outstanding Unit Award. Airman Musick serves at Dyess AFB, Tex., as a vehicle operator with the 96th Combat Support Group which received the award for exceptionally meritorious service from July 1, 1971. through June of last year. The airman's unit was cited for over -all professionalism, high standards of logistics and administrative support and for fulfilling widely varying re quirements of several other major air commands. His wife is the former Jeannie L. Shuman. Airman and Mrs. Musick have one child. Anna. Banquet & Dance The Heppner 8th graders banquet will be held on Friday, May 25, at 6:30 p.m. at the Elks Club. The 8th grade mothers are preparing the food and it will be served by 7th grade girls. A dance, sponsored by the Elks Club, will follow the banquet at 8 p.m Members of the Soroptimist Club will serve refreshments at the dance. The banquet is for 8th graders exclusively, but 7th graders are invited to attend the dance. Streakers Pick Co-Captains The Girls Little League Team No. 1 met on May 17th and had practice. The girls selected "Streak ers" as the team name and elected Kim Bolander and Laurie Malcom co-captains. The most sought after team position is that of "first base." CAL'S CAFE Wrangler awards presenta tions were combined with a potluek dinner and dance this year on May 18 at the American Legion Hall in Heppner. The Heppner Rodeo queen and her court were special guests of the Wranglers. Bob Montgomery, president of Wranglers, intro duced the royalty.
