Wandering Down A Nearby River By PHILSTRANDVOLD (G-T Foreman) It was early Saturday morn ing a few weeks ago when I joined a group of 14 for a float trip down the John Day River. It was a 2 day trip for 8 of us as the rest left, missing the scenic part of the run. Two 10-men rubber rafts, fitted with wooden frames, were put into the water at Twicken ham, down from Sarvice Creek. Soon we were floating lazily down the somewhat murky waters, risen a little from the recent rains. Painted hills greeted us on one side while fine looking cattle eyeballed us on the other. Ahead of us purple-mountain majesties rose above the sage brushed plains. Not even a sign of a fruited apple around. There is one predominate feature of the John Day River country.' Rock. But oh what varied colors and shapes. Very rocky beaches and pinnacles of rock, straight up from the flowing river. Especially in the Big Bend area. One unique rock formation was Fingers Cliff. I peered at my fingers and saw why. Colors of red, green, purple, pink, white, grey, brown, black, yellow and violet were represented in, the rock formations. And. the river twisted boldly around the towering rimrocks with one object in mind: Get that water to the Columbia on time. The first day was the most fun as rapids were ridden. No danger of being swamped, but wet shoes and a pant leg or two were in evidence. Burnt Ranch rapids and Russo rapids were the best. Lots of smaller rapids and "swells" the second day, but they were "yawners" as we were old river rats by now ! The river was quite wide in places, but the narrower parts looked mighty deep. Guide Jack Steiwer said the river was down quite a bit compared to last year at the same time. But my eyes behold a lot of water in that ol' river. We didn't see any game, but there were lots of cattle, some teetering on 45 degree slopes. Spied one healthy Guernsey going up a 90 degree slope with suction cups in its hooves. We probably disturbed, over a hundred Canadian honkers along the river. One pair was quite mad as they were really honkin' with great vigor. Quite a sight to watch those geese lift up from the slow-moving waters like an over-loaded aircraft straining for height. Lots of hawks, sparrows and what have you, soaring among the air currents. Also brightly colored birds along the shore, but didn't note the type. In other words, I'm ignorant. Camped overnite just below Burnt Ranch Rapids. It was near a dirt road for the carryall to bring our sleeping gear, foodstuffs, etc. So we weren't really roughing it. Climbed a good size hill and took some pics. A truly magnificent view of "snake" river. Hit my camera for not taking another roll of film. Still took 17 pictures and had to be very conserva tive. Also took a beautiful black photo of the inside of my coat pocket. Reached in for my camera and forgot it was loaded. We came out of the river just above Clarno around 3 p m Sunday and wished there was more time to continue. On Friday Earl Norris flew to Tocoma, Wash, to bring Ken Norris to Spray to join his w ife Judy and Ken Norris Jr. who were stayng with Mr. and Mrs. Don Culver. Sunday Mr. and Mrs. Earl Norris had Easter dinner with Mr. and Mrs. Do.i Culver and Mr. and Mrs. Ken Norris and son. L
