Mrs. Cornett Green who has visited the area about which British poet, Mr. Lauri Lee likes to write, gave an enthusiastic review of his book "Cider With Rosie" to the Bookworms at their first February meeting. Using a copy of this autobio graphy which her relatives In England sent as a gift, Florence took her listeners Into the picturesque English Lowlands to some of the charming old villages of stone houses that nestle in the Cotswold Hills. Lauri Lee left the Cotswold as a young man set on making his fortune in London. Now he is a successful poet and novelist and has been able to return to the scenes of his pleasant childhood where he continues his writing career. This story of the author's early years describes people, places, customs, and incidents in vivid colors. One happening he pictures is the change that took place when the Squire died: "The Big House was sold by auction and became a Home for Invalids. The lake silted up, the swans flew away, and the great pike choked in the reeds. With the Squire's hand removed our village fell apart though we were about to do so anyway. His servants dispersed and went into the factories. His nephew broke up the estate." Although Mr. Lee writes of a time when life moved at a slower tempo than it does today, his words are lively, his choice of memories to recount is entertaining, and his book is one that those who enjoy things British will find most pleasing reading. London Sunday Times re viewer H E. Bates states "This poet, whose prose Is quick and bright as a snake has here written a gay, impatient, Jaunty and in parts slightly mocking the queen selection committee. Requirements for contestants are that they must be 19 years of age by January 1, 1973 and unmarried.
