Sorni at Gunther's. Sponsored by Soroptimist Club of LaGrande, the Sorop tinust Club of Pendleton was chartered August 19, 1970. Twenty-two- executive busi ness women comprise the membership. HISTORY: Although one of our newer Clubs. Pendleton Sorop timists have been busily translating their commun ity's needs into action. Pro grams have ranged from lo cal parks, drug abuse and patriotism to speakers from organizations working in the various fields of human needs. SERVICE PROJECTS: Donation to Main Street Cowboys for bench during Roundup, Recreation Equip ment to City Parks, book to t matilla County Library, $10.00 in gifts and 35 hours of volunteer help for Christ- GAIL HIGKES. born in San Louis Obispo, California, reared in Milton-Freeater, is a great-grand-daughter of Susan Frazier and Samuel Coe 1869 pioneers in the illa walla valley. She is the oldest of three children and was valedictorian at Mc Laughlin High in 1953. Gail married Allen Fughes, a des cendant of early Heppner residents in 1953. He is in a partnership with his brother Berlin and father W. E. Hughes in several ranches. Gail and Allen have three daughters, Patricia 15. Caro lyn 5, and Jennifer 4. Gail is active in All Saints Episco pal Church where she shares oganist duties. She keeps all ranch records for the part nership and especially enjoys needlework and gardening. GLADYS A. JONES, wife of Judge Paul W. Jones, is a rather new member of the Heppner club. The Jones live 8 miles from town on a wheat ranch which they have operated for 34 years. The three Jones children are: a married son, HoodRiver with a son and daughter; a married daughter, Renton, Wa. with 2 sons, and a single son in Pendleton. Gladys has worked for the U.S. Forest Service as a clerk (personnel) for the past 12 years. Her interests are in the growth and wel fare of all of Morrow Coun ty and in her own family. CORRECT TERMINOLOGY Soroptimists always use these terms: club meeting, area meeting or area day, district meeting, regional conference, biennial conven tion (SFA) and international convention (S1A). Do we remember to say a kind word? This Club writes letters of commenda tion to proprietors who re juvinate their buildings. They are also co-operating with ot her local clubs in projects of benefit to their commu nity. Contributions are nude to Pendleton Hot Line. Funds are raised by Soroptimist Club of Pendleton by a tra veling basket, recipe sales, candy and stationery sales, luncheon with all proceeds to dub and a rummage sale. May U. 19T3 MADGE THOMSON ana hus band Jim have always been happy with the deep roots they have in Heppner, and feel that life has been very good to them. They are co-owners of Thomson Bros. Grocery where Jim has worked 45 years. Madge taught at O S X. and Heppner High for a few years, was secretary to the county agent for 4 years, and helped as clerk and book keeper in the grocery store for many years. She took time out to be home when they were raising their children and has been involved with many community activities. She is now completing her 7th year as librarian in the high school. She enjoys reading, gardening, and handcrafts. The Thomsons have three children and two grandsons. A married daughter lives in California, another daughter in Portland, and their son has just completed his army assignment to Germany and has returned with his wife to Oregon. CHARTER MEMBERS Seven Charter Members of the Heppner Club are still in this area. Etta Parker, Elaine George and Eleanor Gouty are active members, full time, and Olive Hughes meets with the club whenever she is in town. Three Char ter Members have resigned but still live in Heppner: Ida Farra, Helen Ruggles, and Jeanne Dobbs. Phone Heppner 676-5349 Heppner Soroptimist urges you to eat more beef introducing.... The Soroptimist Club of Ontario MEETINGS: Business, second Tues day, Moore Hotel, 8 p.m. Program, fourth Tuesday, Mwre Hotel or memrs' homes. HISTORY: Soroptimist Club of Ontario was chartered Oct. 16, 1943, under the sponsorship of the Baker Club. SERVICE PROJECTS: Much of the activity dur ing its first years centered around war relief but mem lers were also Involved in other community activities. During its entire history the Club has niade contributions to Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts and 4-H. Gifts of many kinds, ranging from Christ mas gifts to beauty supplies as needed have been made to patients in the nursing home. March of Dimes, Salvation Army, Oregon's Crippled Children's Society, Cancer Society. Crusade for Free dom and TB and Health As sociation have received dona tions. Groc. Main St. Heppner swimming pool, gifts were made to the hospital for iso lates, sprinkler system and air conditioners. Ontario Club participates in the annual Citizenship Aard. First prize has been raised to $100 bond with a $50 bond for second prize.
